Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database | EWG 06/11/2017

Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database | EWG

Beautycounter and ENvironmental Working Group on "dirty product" apps:

"Skin Deep is for educational purposes only. Product ratings are brand-blind, based on a hazard classification scoring system."

For more information on Skin Deep Ratings tool, check out the Skin Deep user guide: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/users-guide-to-skin-deep/ and more information below:

EWG's Skin Deep Ratings Tool
The Skin Deep database is a great tool, one that we use very often to help us screen ingredients. The user does have to take the scores with a grain of salt sometimes, though. There are ingredients that score higher because one or more studies indicate that the ingredient might pose some risk. Most of these studies are looking at the chemical at full dose, which is why, for example, Citrus Nobilis (mandarin orange peel oil) has use restrictions-the fully concentrated orange oil (or any citrus) can be caustic. However, we use less than 1% in our products, and at that level, the ingredient is beneficial, not harmful.

Sometimes you will see "use restriction" in the Skin Deep summary--this is again because of the concentration, or because of concerns about the route of exposure to the chemical. There are ingredients, like Octyldodecyl Ricinoleate for example, that are safe for use on the skin, but one wouldn't want to inhale that ingredient, because it could for example irritate the lungs, or be difficult to digest. We take exposure (intentional or accidental) into account when formulating our products.

For more info on Skin Deep's scoring please see below.
Skin Deep scoring FAQ: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/faq/
Skin Deep Methodology: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/site/about.php
We never choose 0-scoring ingredients that have no data over those with data, but which score higher/worse in Skin Deep. In fact, we give preference to ingredients with data over those than have no data, other things (function, source, availability) being relatively equal. While we take the database into account, we do not craft our ingredient formulations to score well in Skin Deep.

Overall, Beautycounter's commitment to transparency is bar-none in the industry. We do use use raw materials that have been pre-preserved, and we tell consumers about every single ingredient in our products. We also test our products for possible levels of background contamination that could occur in ingredient sourcing or manufacturing- and if we find hidden chemicals or concerning heavy metals, we will not bring the product to market. (See health & safety FAQs for more info.)

Beautycounter isn't just about being "free of" some problematic ingredients--though, we certainly have our Never List of ingredients we won't touch, but we go much further than that. We carefully screen every single potential ingredient before allowing it into our products.

Think Dirty

Think Dirty is a mobile app with the stated aim to help consumers learn more about the potential hazards of product ingredients, and to compare brands. The app allows users to scan UPC codes and take photos of cosmetics products to get a hazard score for products based on the individual ingredient scores.

Beautycounter believes wholeheartedly in providing consumers with more information about ingredient hazards. However, at this time, we do not think Think Dirty is fulfilling its mission. We believe the app’s users do not get access to accurate information and true comparisons because of the current scoring methodology, the lack of context about company policies, and the fact that brands that fully disclose ingredients are compared with some companies that are not disclosing all of their ingredients.

Some of the ingredients in Think Dirty score high (the range is 0-10, 10 being a “high hazard”) because of one or more studies indicating that they may be allergens. While individuals with allergies may have reactions to certain ingredients, that doesn’t mean those ingredients present hazards to the general population. Other ingredients score high because they may contain impurities. But companies can obtain certificates of purity from suppliers to ensure that ingredients are not contaminated. Beautycounter does this, and we hope to share these certifications with Think Dirty so that it can take this important information into account. Preservatives also score high, and to some extent this is understandable, as preservatives are meant to kill microorganisms. But companies that use water in their products have to use preservatives, usually in very small amounts (about 1% of each total product). We feel that tools meant to help consumers understand a cosmetic’s potential hazard need to take this very small percentage as well as the functional need for these ingredients into account. After all, not using preservatives poses a health risk. And unintentionally incentivizing cosmetics companies to hide the high-scoring ingredients from ingredient lists does not protect consumers’ health or move the market toward safer, more transparent ingredient choices.

Beautycounter screens every single ingredient for safety, and we take the concentration and route of exposure into account when selecting ingredients. We go to great lengths to disclose every ingredient—including the preservatives that other brands might be hiding—and we test and control for contamination (including heavy metals, which often contaminate color cosmetics). We are confident that our products are some of the safest, highest-performing on the market.

In short, we believe Think Dirty does not allow for an apples-to-apples comparison of products or brands, or an accurate view of the real-life use of cosmetics chemicals.

Beautycounter wants to help improve access to information and to move the market toward greater transparency and safer ingredients and products. To that end, we are committed to working with Think Dirty and our mutual friends at the Breast Cancer Fund to try to improve the methodology, data sources, and company information and therefore the user experience. We believe this tool has potential, and will keep you posted on the evolution of the app."
