Today is World Prematurity Day! At the Journal of Human Lactation, we recognize the unique challenges faced by premature infants and their families. Our latest issue highlights groundbreaking research on lactation support in the preterm setting - a resource crucial to enhancing breastfeeding initiation and continuation for preterm babies.
Did you know that approximately 15 million babies are born prematurely each year worldwide? That's about 1 in 10 births. Through evidence-based research and practice, we're committed to supporting optimal nutrition and care for these vulnerable infants.
Join us in raising awareness about preterm birth and celebrating the resilience of premature babies and their families. Together, we can work towards better outcomes and support for preterm infants globally.
As we transition to online distribution of the Journal of Human Lactation for ILCA members, we will be refreshing our cover. We have loved featuring Dr. Ryan M. McAdam’s original artwork for the last four years, and it is with gratitude that we retire the images he created for us. For the new cover, we are partnering with Sage Publishing to find a design that better suits the small icon format most readers will see when accessing the journal. https://journals.sagepub.com/home/jhl

Led by UNICEF and WHO, the Global Complementary Feeding Collective is a partnership of global agencies dedicated to improving the nutrition of children aged from 6 to 23 months through improved programming, policies, and advocacy, and calls on governments, policymakers, philanthropists, and civil society to address the global nutrition crisis for children under two years of age by placing complementary feeding at the forefront of global, regional, and country agendas.
The complementary feeding period, when foods are introduced to the diet alongside continued breastfeeding, affects survival, growth, development, school achievement, and lifelong health and earning. However, around the globe, many children are not receiving the nutrition they need during this time period to grow and thrive.
• One in four children experiences severe child food poverty during early childhood
• Only 47 percent of children 6-23 months are consuming egg, fish, or meat
For far too long, progress on efforts to improve nutrition during the complementary feeding period has stalled, with no meaningful progress globally in the past 10 years. As a result, nutrition for children under two has become a crisis that needs urgent action.
