We chardonnay lovers know it’s a good sign to see the words “Sonoma Coast” on a bottle. Fort Ross-Seaview is an under-the-radar subregion within the Sonoma Coast that is truly coastal. For chardonnay, this means that the grapes get extra cool night time temperatures but also plenty of sunshine, and this helps to develop rich, concentrated flavors in a balanced way (not to sweet, not too acidic).
Because of this coastal effect, some of the most famous names in California chardonnay (think Marcassin, Failla, Flowers, Hirsch, Williams Selyem, etc.) make wines from Fort Ross-Seaview. If you’re not the type to unwind with a $100 chardonnay on any given Tuesday, great Fort Ross-Seaview chardonnays can be found for under $30 if you know where to look.
