You Can't Make Somebody Tell The Truth

"Telling the truth is not what ends relationships; it is the lying and the keeping of secrets that makes a relationship unsustainable for betrayed partners."

The Betrayer's Dilemma In last week’s blog, I discussed your right as a betrayed partner to know the full details of what your significant other has done. I also introduced the idea that your right to know often conflicts with your significant other’s desire to tell only partial truths and to continue keeping secrets....

Wanting and Needing The Truth: When Rights and Reality Collide 11/01/2021

Wanting and Needing The Truth: When Rights and Reality Collide

Wanting and Needing the Truth: When Rights and Reality Collide

"After learning about infidelity, most betrayed partners feel an intense need to know the scope and depth of what has happened. The discovery of being lied to, sometimes for years or even decades, and the resulting sense of reality fragmentation leaves them shocked, destabilized, and overwhelmed. It often feels like finding out the whole truth about what has happened, getting every single detail in place, is the only way to escape the insanity and return to a place where reality once more seems knowable. Piecing together the truth feels like the only way to piece yourself back together again."

THE MOST IGNORED AREA OF RECOVERY

S*xual betrayal. S*x addiction. Cheating. Infidelity. Betrayal Trauma. We have all these words and terms that we use to describe the different events and behaviors that can bring us into recovery. At the heart of all this terminology is the issue of s*x. However, despite the centrality of this issue, most of us will find that there is surprisingly little focus on the issue of s*x and s*xuality within the recovery community.

Couples' therapists are notoriously reluctant to inquire about people's s*x lives and even Certified S*x Addiction Therapists can find themselves working all around the issue of s*x (particularly the compulsive behaviors) but not directly engaging with the s*x lives of their clients (particularly growing and expanding s*xual health).

Very few of us are raised to be able to comfortably and openly talk about the way that our s*xuality is given expression in the many facets of our lives. For too many of us, shame became linked to s*xuality when we were children whether through our home life, school life, religious teaching or peer group interactions. This shame then stays with us as we grow up and try to navigate our way toward a healthy enjoyable s*xual life as adults. Needless to say, that doesn't always go as planned and many of us veer off into compulsivity, avoidance, repression or expression that doesn't serve us well.

The good news is that growing and expanding our s*xual health is a life-long endeavor. All of us are on the journey. S*x changes over the lifespan as we mature and develop and know and understand ourselves better. The key lies in coming into awareness about this important facet of our humanity and intentionally focusing on learning, healing, and growing our s*xual health in whatever ways best serve us and our relationships.

If you are in the healing process following s*xual betrayal (regardless of which role you have played), intentional focus on the s*xual injury that has occurred, and healing of your individual s*xuality and the s*xual relationship are vital.

This fall, I am presenting our S*xuality and Recovery two-part workshop. If you are ready to dive in and think more deeply about your s*xual story, how your childhood impacted your s*xual development and the thinking, beliefs and behaviors that you carried forward into adulthood – then Part 1 of this workshop will be a great fit for you.

If you are ready to take a look at the cultural myths and misinformation that often shape our understanding of our s*xuality and s*xual relationships without us even knowing it and replace those with a more accurate, affirming and positive view of s*xuality then Part 2 of this workshop will be a great fit for you.

My hope for all those on the healing journey is that s*xuality can be reclaimed as a joyful, fulfilling and satisfying part of life and relationships rather than a source of pain or betrayal.

Betrayal: A Journey of Self-Imposed Discovery 10/18/2021

Betrayal: A Journey of Self-Imposed Discovery

"We are all capable of glorious bravery and hideous damage. Part of being a mature adult is to be aware of both the dignity and depravity that reside within us. You are in the middle of adversity right now. This means that you are automatically on a journey of imposed self-discovery. While you may feel that you have lost your true self and don't know who you are anymore, you are also going to gain new parts of yourself in this process that you will treasure for the rest of your life."

The Knowing and Not Knowing of Betrayal Blindness

When our secure connection with our partner is threatened by betrayal and our trust is ruptured, we perceive this trauma as a threat to our very survival, and we react to that trauma in one of three hardwired ways.

The Knowing and Not Knowing of Betrayal Blindness Many betrayed partners come into therapy in a state of shock and disbelief about their partner’s extracurricular s*xual behaviors. They sit on my couch and tell me they had no idea, not even an inkling, of what their significant other was doing.
