In recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we celebrate the countless achievements and contributions the AAPI community has made in Loudoun County and throughout our nation. Additionally, we would like to raise awareness about the AAPI community's experience with domestic and sexual violence, as well as provide the resources that exist to help survivors come forward and live a life free from violence.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month!

Emotional security is equally as important as physical safety. In addition to our 24/7 Survivor Hotline, LAWS also offers adult, youth, and child trauma therapy services and support groups.

Victim blaming is harmful to sexual assault survivors. You can help support survivors by actively challenging victim blaming statements when you hear them. The only person responsible for assault is the perpetrator.
Children with disabilities are especially vulnerable to abuse. If you suspect abuse report it immediately.
Looking for a support group? Join us this May as we host an 8 week, in-person Trauma and Recovery support group for adult survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Group begins on Thursday, May 11th at 6 p.m. and is open to any adult survivors in Loudoun county. Registration and follow up phone with therapist are required to attend. To get more information or register, please use the QR code on the flyer or go to: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LAWSSupportGroup
This week, Detective Goldberg with the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office's Office was presented with the Unsung Hero Award for her work in creating a new state law to protect victims of suffocation. Working with Loudoun's Domestic Abuse Response Team, Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, and a forensic nurse to amend an existing statute, the bill passed unanimously in both chambers and will take effect on July 1st, 2023.

Congratulations, Detective Goldberg, and thank you for your advocacy for survivors!
Grooming is a pattern of manipulative behaviors use to target children, teens and vulnerable adults to gain access, coerce the victim and reduce the risk of being caught. These tactics are typically employed by a family member, coach, teacher, youth group leader or someone else who has in the potential victim's circle of trust. Know the patterns so that you can take action to prevent abuse!
Boys and girls both experience trauma from sexual abuse. And with support, anyone of any gender can heal from the trauma of sexual abuse.
Excited to be sharing our services and supporting survivors at the Embrace Your Voice 2023 Survivor Poetry Share for in Alexandria, VA tonight!
The Denim Day campaign began iin 1999 when the Italian Supreme Court overturned a r**e conviction due to the tight jeans worn by the victim. The justices felt that because the victim's jeans were so tight, she must have helped the perpetrator remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The next day, women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity. Denim Day has become the longest running sexual violence awareness campaign in history! (denimday.org)
Just like there is no typical victim of child sexual abuse, there is no typical person who commits abuse. Anyone of any gender can commit or be affected by child abuse. We can all play a role in preventing child abuse by checking in and speaking up!.

The survivor can call our 24/7 survivor hotline, and a trained advocate or volunteer will answer. If shelter is requested, the advocate or volunteer will conduct an assessment to determine whether the survivor is appropriate for our shelter services. If the caller is accepted, LAWS can coordinate transportation if needed. Safety planning is always a part of the hotline conversation whether someone comes into our shelter program or not.

When you call our 24/7 survivor hotline at 703-777-6552, a trained advocate or volunteer will answer. An advocate will answer the call and provide needed support as well as information about services and the next steps to keep the survivor and their children safe. Safety planning is always a top priority for our hotline advocates. The advocate will work with the caller to assess what services might be needed or helpful. If shelter is requested, the advocate will explore our shelter options with the victim. If other services offered by LAWS are needed, the advocate will refer the survivor to services available at the LAWS Community Services Center. The advocate may also refer the survivor to other community resources that may be more appropriate. Calling our 24/7 survivor hotline is always confidential.
