Loudoun Country Day School is an award-winning, accredited, coeducational independent school serving preschool through eighth grade students in northern Virginia.

Yesterday, Mrs. Borowski’s Kindergarten class made predictions whether Phil the groundhog would see his shadow or not. Today, on Groundhog’s Day, they watched the news to see if their predictions had come true. It looks like we all can expect 6 more weeks of winter. There might be a few kindergarteners with fingers crossed that a snow day or two might be mixed in!

Today was our annual basketball play day with The Hill School. Love seeing our fourth-grade Eagles play their hearts out. Their spirit of competition and fun was awesome to watch!
💙💚

It was a full house at our Luau-themed Bingo Night! Our wonderful Parents Association spread the Aloha (and the fun). Big thanks to parents Dani Eaton, Ashley Maruca Witt, Britney Beauchemin, and Katie Groupe for their leadership and endless creativity!

We join the to mark today—International , the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Our fourth graders gave performances worthy of a Golden Globe when they created skits (and signs) to interpret and act out our LCDS core values. We love seeing how each child interprets these important words at each stage of their development.

In Art, kindergarten through third grade just completed our study of the country of Japan. Kindergarteners studied Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and created artwork based on her famous pumpkins. The first graders learned about how Children's Day is celebrated in Japan by children who fly koi shaped kites. Second grade made suminagashi, or floating ink prints. Our third graders learned about how pagodas are used and created artwork using white pens and liquid watercolors. They have made our art hallway a beautiful place to visit!

How is it possible that the Class of 2021 is driving already??

Last Friday night 🎶💃🏼🕺🌟🎉
Middle school dances are the best! Making memories that will last a lifetime.

Happy Lunar New Year! Wishing happiness and prosperity to all.
We were so fortunate to have several of our fantastic parents treat our younger students to festivities including a traditional Chinese dance performance, homemade dumplings, a violinist performing spring-festival music, and more!

The sun is finally shining today (hurray!), but this week's rains made this stunning photo possible.Like all things in life, it's all about perspective.
Kudos to our Middle School History Teacher/Photographer John Krebs for capturing this work of art and changing up our point of view.

What's more fun than Hat Day in PreKindergarten? The smiles say it all.

Thanks to Veterans Moving Forward for bringing three of their precious service pups to meet the kids in our after-school Eagles Nest Community Service program. This wonderful non profit trains service dogs for veterans and provides them free of charge to those who qualify. This trimester, we will be volunteering as dog walkers with their organization, as well as working on other projects like diaper drives.

Our fabulous Show Choir performed brilliantly for a packed house at the Washington Wizards vs NY Knicks game last night. What an exciting experience!

If you could choose just one word to help you have your best year ever, what would it be? Third graders watched a book reading of “One Word for Kids,” and then brainstormed and chose their own One Word that would make them the best person they could be in 2023. They gave thoughtful reasons as to why they chose their one word and specific ways in which they could be their best. What's your word for 2023?

Second graders got into the groove, practicing a dance for their upcoming 17th Century Fair, which will be full of all things pertaining to colonial life. Even Dr. Odell got into the swing of things.

CONGRATULATIONS to seventh grader Michael Walker for being selected to perform in the prestigious Gunnery Sergeant Benjamin Albright recital and masterclass, sponsored by the Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra. Michael has also been chose to represent LCDS at All-District Middle School band in February. placing 3rd out of 57 trumpet players! The most incredible thing about his achievements: Michael only began playing trumpet last year. All of his hard work and dedication has certainly paid off! We are so proud of him.

Our first grade is learning about the Scientific Method - the steps scientists use to conduct experiments. They began by asking questions like, “How are bubbles made?" "Why do they pop?" and "Do they last longer in the cold air?" The children then made hypotheses and conducted experiments by making and blowing bubbles!

Twice a year, a faculty panel chooses one piece of art work per grade to grace the Headmaster’s Gallery in our foyer. We have soooo many fabulous artists that it’s always difficult to choose, but here are our winners. Congratulations to these talented LCDS Eagles!

Our Eagles in action! The LCDS Green team had an impressive win over Grace Christian School yesterday. Keep soaring high, Eagles!

Good vibes for 2023

No matter how young you are (or how old you are), the start of the new year is a great time to take stock of the highlights and challenges of the past year, and how to move forward from there. What was wonderful? What might you try to do a little differently or shift your priorities to focus on with more of your time? Our first graders enjoyed creating a visual representation of their reflections and intentions. We love that starting at LCDS in 2023 won the heart of one of our littles!

During this month of resolutions, let's instead focus on our personal evolution.
In On the Same Page with Dr. Odell Book Club, we're reading The Practice of Groundedness: A Transformative Path to Success that Feeds – Not Crushes – Your Soul by Brad Stulberg.
He defines groundedness as “unwavering internal strength and self-confidence that sustains you through ups and downs. It is a deep reservoir of integrity and fortitude, of wholeness, out of which lasting performance, well-being, and fulfillment emerge.” Dr. Odell first read this book in early 2022 and says, "It showed me that thriving requires nurturing what keeps us grounded through all kinds of weather, rather than focusing on the wind and storm."
Current parents, alumni parents, and alumni are invited to join us for a book discussion, followed by yoga and meditation session.

Save the date for our fabulous annual gala and auction. Details to come!

Happy New Year!

What a day for fabulous holiday music! We hosted Powhatan School for an afternoon concert that included our Middle School choir, orchestra, and Show Choir. Then tonight, first, second, and third graders spread the joy with fun, beautiful songs celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Merry everything!

Look what’s out today: the December issue of LCDS Living Magazine!! It’s chock-full of family traditions, special recipes, and rituals that celebrate our diverse community. We hope you love it as much as we do!

We had a very special visitor today! Old Saint Nick made his way all the way from the North Pole to make our prekindergarteners’ day extra special. Santa read holiday books, listened to the childrens’ wish lists, and even shared some magic pixie dust that makes his reindeer fly! Special thanks to the Sandeen family for bringing Christmas cheer to LCDS.

We fa-la-la-la-love our annual faculty holiday festive attire contest! From Merriest to Gawdiest to Most Twinkly and Ugliest Christmas Sweater, there was something for everyone.
Our amazing LCDS Show Choir spread holiday cheer throughout downtown Leesburg today. Tis the season to enjoy their beautiful voices.

First basketball game of the year in the
Dr. E. Randall Hollister gymnasium.
Fly, Eagles, fly!

Did you know we have over 50 field trips scheduled this year? Today, fourth graders got in the holiday spirit by watching Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol at The Ford Theater. No Bah Humbugs here!

We couldn't love this more! Cheers to our happy place, LCDS!
