Today is the last day of Women’s History Month and is Women-Owned Business Day. I want to recognize a very strong woman, and speak on my personal journey as a woman business owner.

My mom, Sandie, is a strong Jewish woman, a serial entrepreneur, and a huge influence on my life. I remember going to swap meets and flea markets with her and watching her interactions with people. Despite her small size, she is a fierce negotiator - always on the lookout for good deals and coming up with new ways to make money. My mom tries really hard to make everyone happy, and one of the ways she does that is through food. She is an amazing cook, and “The Best Pizza in Town” is her personal recipe that we used at Four Horseman Pizza and Cheers Pub in South Bend. Her passion for food is why we strive to have unique and delicious options at THAT Sports Bar, so if you see her visiting the bar, say hi and give her a hug. Even after she’s “retired” she can’t sit still so you need to be fast!

After witnessing the amazing things my mom did growing up, I knew I wanted to own a business myself. I went to college just long enough to get a Business Administration degree, and shortly after I graduated I convinced my mom to buy a bar. In 2009 she bought Cheers Pub in Roseland, Indiana and we split duties – I ran all of the day-to-day operations of the bar and she ran the restaurant and handled all of the finances. I approached the business the same way I saw my mom as I grew up. I took all of the qualities I admired and applied them daily. We were a great team, and it gave me so much experience in the 7 years I worked there. One thing I specifically recall is that there weren’t many people that believed in me. I was a young female, naïve, and had no idea what I was doing. The best advice I ever got was “fake it til you make it”. It became my mantra. I held my head up high, and I learned powerful lessons by trial and error. Eventually I found the recipe for success by mixing music with liquor (who knew?) and Cheers Pub was THE place to be for touring rock bands. Fast forward to 2016 and I was engaged to a man in another city who couldn’t move to me. Suddenly I had to choose between the two loves of my life – my fiancé or my business. I packed up my things, kissed my momma goodbye, and left to start a new life.

The first time I walked into Stats Bar and Grill in 2016, I knew I would own it. It was a hot mess, but it had so much potential. I found myself in the right place at the right time on January 19th, 2019. I was a bartender, and the business had closed permanently that night. I got a call from the building owner asking if I wanted to buy it from him. He saw my passion and drive and knew I would be the right person to continue the legacy of the building. (Or he needed to keep paying the mortgage.) This was a Saturday. By Monday the 21st I had secured a loan, and the staff and I got to work to start something new. It was one of the scariest and most exciting things I’d ever done in my life. I was starting over completely. I had to face the same hurdles that I saw at my old bar, plus I had some new struggles. I was trying a new niche in a new city with completely new clientele. COVID hit one year after I opened. Running a restaurant AND a bar was completely new to me.

Three years later, we’re stronger than ever. My goal when I bought the business was to turn one million dollars of revenue per year. For reference, that’s 275% of what the business was doing when I bought it. My husband told me I should aim lower so I’m not disappointed, but I refuse to accept anything less than my best. In just three years of being open, we are just shy of that number. I put every single ounce of me into my business - literal blood, sweat, and tears. Thank you to everyone who has supported me on the journey – without you I couldn’t have done it. Thank you to everyone who doubted me as well – you are what drives me to succeed.
