Now that I have collected myself a bit, let me share what an honor this afternoon was!
This is Specialist Murphy who was stationed in South Korea on the boarder to North Korea.
He honorably served in the US Army and is now a resident at Maple Grove. Our friend John Easterling went to visit him and when he found out he didn't have a Quilt of Valor we dug in and Jim Ray and John made it happen.
There is something about one veteran wrapping another veteran in a Quilt....how eyes stay dry, I don't know.
John, a Marine, who served in Vietnam made this such a wonderful ceremony and all the residents and staff in attendance, including Spec Murphy's sister were deeply moved by the warm words and the beautiful Quilt made by the Plum Creek Quilters. Thank you Mary Easterling for helping to make this such a memorable afternoon! This was such a heartwarming experience and we believe a handmade warm Quilt around one's shoulders always gives comfort and a feeling of peace.

This is the wonderful feature on Roy Castle, US Army Veteran Korean War. He passed away last week but Dustin Blackson was able to spend a day with him last year and have great conversations and has now wrapped them in this beautiful piece ! Thank you Dustin!
If you love Appalachian history, coalfield resilience, and the kind of quiet leadership that holds a community together, you’ll want to read (and listen to) this feature on Roy Castle. From growing up in Dante to serving in the U.S. Army, spending decades in the mines, standing with fellow workers during the Pittston strike, and later carrying the weight of public service as mayor during one of Castlewood’s hardest chapters—Roy’s story is honest, grounded, and deeply human. It’s also a reminder that faith and service often look like showing up, helping neighbors, and doing the right thing when it’s not easy. Click on the link in the comments to hear his reflections and experience a life shaped by labor, love of family, and devotion to community.
