It was New Comic Book Day. Didn't see the first comic till daybreak. Then they came. Variant covers. Nobody thought much of it at first. Cover A. Cover B. Sometimes people'd buy one. Sometimes both. Didn't see the foil covers till later. They came in, and people started shoutin', and cryin', and hollerin'. Sometimes, they got the foil. Sometimes they didn't. Then the chromium covers with edges so sharp they'd cut you open started swarmin'. Next the blind bags appeared and got ripped to shreds. By noon, men were trading books they'd never read for books they'd never open. My friend, Joey, from Montana, was arguing that buying seventeen copies was, "an investment strategy." By the time the shop closed that day, people came in for one copy and left as many as they could carry. Their budgets torn apart, wallets flappin' empty in parking lot...
