In 1904, at age 64, Civil War veteran Samuel Perry Dinsmoor started building his cabin home and the Garden of Eden in Lucas. For the cabin's exterior, he chose postrock limestone, the fine-quality building stone used in many commercial buildings, houses, barns, and fence posts in the area. The sculptures are concrete. Completed in 1928, Dinsmoor's home and visionary sculptures are prime examples of the Grassroots Art genre. Lucas is located on Post Rock Scenic Byway. https://www.gardenofedenlucas.org/ https://www.travelks.com/listing/garden-of-eden/1707/ https://www.travelks.com/things-to-do/byways-and-highways/byways/post-rock/

We plan on visiting Lindsborg either this year or next. We'll have to check this out!

Across Kansas we have encountered a number of dugouts where Kansans lived in the 1800s and many have interesting stories. This was the dugout outside Lindsborg, where Gustaf and Maria Höglund lived in 1868. They used their former covered wagon as the roof. It is free to visit at 12th Avenue and Swenson.

Although there are more Volga crosses at Holy Cross Church Cemetery in Pfeifer, Kansas, these beautiful crosses are found in St. Fidelis Cemetery in Victoria, Kansas. The crosses are part of the ethnic heritage of the German speaking people from the Volga River area of south Russia who settled this part of Kansas.
