Wild dolphins belong in the ocean, not in the international entertainment trade.
The Solomon Islands' restored ban is a reminder that public pressure, investigation, and persistence can help stop exploitation before more dolphins pay the price.

A seaside sanctuary would not erase what captivity has done to Wikie and Keijo. But it could give them a life without shows, crowds, and breeding. Another tank is not the answer.

This is a win against dolphin trafficking.
The Solomon Islands has restored its ban on live dolphin exports, reversing a move that could have pushed wild dolphins back toward aquariums, marine parks, and dolphinaria overseas.

Two orcas. One mother and son. A lifetime in captivity. Now Wikie and Keijo may be sent from Marineland to Loro Parque, an “animal embassy” that still keeps orcas in barren tanks, uses them in shows, and could fold them into its controversial breeding program, creating even more non-releasable orcas.

The ocean asks for nothing, yet gives us everything. 🌊💙
This World Ocean Day, may we choose gratitude, kindness, and action to protect the waters that connect us all.

Marineland is closed, but the belugas are still waiting. Roughly 30 whales remain inside, and a new approval could finally move them one step closer to relocation. However, medical exams and export permits still stand between them and transfer. Every delay matters when animals are trapped with no clear future.

A welfare report praised Mediterraneo Marine Park for “choice” and “complexity.”
But look past the words, and you see the truth: concrete tanks, tourist shows, and dolphins left under the Maltese sun with no shade.
This is how captivity shields itself from scrutiny: with standards that look credible on paper, but fail the animals in practice.

Eight months after inspectors flagged the lack of shade, Mediterraneo’s dolphins are still trapped under the Maltese sun.
No shade. No escape. No choice.
In the wild, dolphins can dive deep, travel miles, and escape the heat. In captivity, even the most basic needs become optional while the facility has been given the green light to continue using marine mammals as tourist attractions

The industry counts on people walking through those park gates.
Empty the Tanks interrupts that. It reminds people that behind every show is a life in captivity.

Pilot whales are highly social animals with strong family bonds and unique forms of communication passed through generations. Yet in some parts of the world, they still face threats from hunts and captivity.
These intelligent beings belong in the open ocean, not confined tanks or driven into slaughter.
At Dolphin Project, we’re working to protect dolphins and whales through education, advocacy, and action helping create a future where they can remain wild and free.
Thanks to collaborations like we’re able to continue our mission to protect dolphins worldwide!
