Extreme Heat: Keeping Kids Safe When Temperatures Soar 08/09/2021

Extreme Heat: Keeping Kids Safe When Temperatures Soar

When weather conditions do not pose a health risk, playing and exercising outside boosts a child's physical and mental health in many ways. However, a heat index at or above 90°F, as identified by the National Weather Service, poses a significant health risk.

High temperatures and extreme heat can cause children to become sick very quickly in several ways. It can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. High heat can also contribute to irritability both for children and their caregivers. And with extreme heat increasing in areas of the United States due to climate change, "eco-anxiety" can cause emotional distress.

To protect your child from the heat as much as possible, watch for symptoms, and call your pediatrician if you see any develop.

Is it safe for my baby to travel in a car seat a few hours at a time?

With vaccines easing the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of families are planning trips again. But since younger children can't get the vaccines yet, many parents are opting for longer car rides rather than traveling on crowded planes or other public transportation.

If you're considering a road trip with your infant, here are some tips to help keep your baby safe and comfortable.

Does my unvaccinated child still have to wear a mask when the rest of the family doesn't? 06/01/2021

Does my unvaccinated child still have to wear a mask when the rest of the family doesn't?

New guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 no longer need to wear masks indoors or outdoors in most cases. But we realize that families with children who are not yet old enough for a vaccine may find it difficult to decide what's best for everyone. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Does my unvaccinated child still have to wear a mask when the rest of the family doesn't? ask-the-pediatrician~Currently, there is no COVID vaccine for kids under age 12. Which means masks are still an important way to protect them. And since unvaccinated children can still transmit the virus to others, mask wearing protects others as well.

When can children get the COVID-19 vaccine? 04/29/2021

When can children get the COVID-19 vaccine?

With vaccines now available to protect against COVID-19, we've made a big step toward ending the pandemic.

Three vaccines have received emergency use authorization for adults, and one can also be given to teens age 16 and up. A vaccine maker recently asked the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to extend its vaccine authorization for children as young as age 12, and clinical trials are now starting in children as young as six months old.

Research shows the vaccines are remarkably effective and safe. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) urges teens and adults to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it is available to them. This is especially important with a rise in cases caused by variant strains of the virus, which seem to be more contagious.

When can children get the COVID-19 vaccine? Before COVID-19 vaccines becomes available for teens younger than 16 and children, clinical trials need to be completed. The AAP is calling for research to be expanded now so that it may be possible to have a vaccine for at least some age groups of children and adolescents before the next school yea...

What are the Early Signs of Autism? 04/16/2021

What are the Early Signs of Autism?

Many children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show developmental differences when they are babies—especially in their social and language skills. Because they usually sit, crawl, and walk on time, less obvious differences in the development of body gestures, pretend play, and social language often go unnoticed.

In addition to speech/language delays and behavioral differences, families may notice differences in the way their child interacts with peers and others.

What are the Early Signs of Autism? Here are some examples of social, communication, and behavioral differences in children with autism. Subtle differences related to autism may be present before a child's first birthday and typically show up before 24 months. Learn more here.

How To Get Your Child To Wear a Bicycle Helmet

Riding a bicycle is an excellent way for kids to spend time outdoors getting exercise. It’s also an Earth friendly way to get around. Falls from bicycles cause serious head injury, though, so make sure your child wears a helmet for every ride.

Here are some tips on how to help your child into the habit.

How To Get Your Child To Wear a Bicycle Helmet Establish the helmet habit early. Have your children wear helmets as soon as they start to ride tricycles and if they are a passenger on the back of an adult's bike.

Safe Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic 03/26/2021

Safe Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic

As more people are able to get COVID-19 vaccines, there's hope that everyday life, including school, may soon get back to normal.

Vaccines will not be available for most students this school year. However, research shows that reopening schools for in-person learning does not seem to significantly increase community transmission of the virus. It depends on whether schools are able to follow COVID-19 public health guidance, though.

All schools should aim to have students attend school in person, which is how they learn best. This means working with public health officials to get community spread of the virus under control. And then, once a school can reopen for in-person learning, layers of safety measures can help keep students, teachers, and staff safe.

Safe Schools During the COVID-19 Pandemic In order for schools to stay open for in-person learning during the pandemic, there are a number of steps they need to take to make sure students, staff and families and communities stay safe from COVID19.

[03/24/21]   Reminder: Well Checks are available from 8:00-3:30 and Sick Visits are available from 3:30-5:00 M-F.
