That Dog Geek
Famous animal behaviourist Ian Dunbar says that punishing a dog for growling is like removing the ticker from a time bomb.
Dogs use growling as a way of letting you know that they are stressed or upset. If you punish a dog for growling, you run the risk that they will avoid the early warning procedure and go straight for a bite the next time that they are uncomfortable.
There is a world of difference between temporarily suppressing a behaviour, and changing the dog's underlying emotional state to produce long term behaviour change.
For example, if you were scared of snakes, and I punished you for screaming by shooting you in the leg, you'd probably force yourself to stop screaming. But have I changed the way you feel about snakes? Would you act rationally if a snake got up close and personal with you? Probably not! If anything, I may have made you feel even more afraid of snakes, as you now associate them with the pain I inflicted.
With your training, always think to yourself - is this a quick, short term solution, or will this benefit my dog and I in the long run?
If you have a dog that growls, keep an eye out for That Dog Geek's next video, the first in a series on helping fearful or reactive dogs.
Hey there everyone. I know it has been a bit since I have posted mostly because I have been busy with puppy classes and the end of the year. I am excited to let you all know that we have created a new community page for the Pet Partners events. For those of you who are not familiar with Pet Partners, it is a collaboration between the Lake Mills Vet Clinic and the Humane Society of Jefferson County. We offer free community events throughout the year. We just put together our schedule for 2017 and it is rockin'! The first two events are posted, so come check it out.

I am sad to say that this happened today to a friend of mine. I am not personally a user of Uber but I ask anyone who is to consider a different option. Refusing service is not only illegal but it is disgraceful.

Congratulation to the Puppies and their people who graduated from Puppy Pre-School last Thursday at the Lake Mills Vet Clinic! Congratulations to the puppy's and their people who graduated from Puppy Preschool last Thursday night. This frolicking group of pups learned how to sit, lay down, come, greet people, park, and were exposed to all kinds of new experiences including bubbles! Four paws up for (from left to right) Bo, Gracie, Oliver, Nico, and Gnomeo, you are all off to a great start!
I have sometimes been asked if dogs grieve like people do. I cannot tell you if they grieve exactly like people do but I can tell you that from recent experience dogs absolutely do grieve. Yesterday Jake, my Grandmother's dog joined my pack after she passed. Jake is grieving and is also having to deal with now living with three other dogs and a cat. That is a lot to deal with.
If you find yourself taking in a dog that has just lost their person or furry friend whether to death or other circumstances, give them time. Here are a few things that can help:
- Let them adjust on their schedule not yours.
- Do not force them to be in the same room, but let them know you are there.
- Talk to them in a calm voice.
- Give them pets and scritches if they want them but do not force it.
- Don't be surprised if they are off their food for a few days, but feel free to tempt them :)
Parking is one of my favorite techniques when working with pups of all sizes and ages. This is a great option when working with pups that like to jump up on visitors. Leash them up before the visitors come in the house and park them until things calm down.
The Parking protocol for safety, for taking a break, for listening to the teacher, for meeting and greeting.
This was a great group of pups and peeps! Best of luck as you continue forward and I look forward to seeing you all again. Pups pictured include Max, Orla, Buster, Lulu, Storm, Zeus, and Cooper!

In this bitterly cold weather be extra careful on how long you let your pups stay outside. If you see them doing the cold foot dance be sure to get them inside and get those tootsies warmed up. Also be sure if you have been walking them on the salted sidewalks and streets to clean off their paws. Check between their paw pads for stray salt. The salt can do damage to their paws pads.
Stay warm everyone!
Such an awesome group of puppies!
Last week's puppy preschool learned "When in doubt, sit", and participated in some peanut-butter-Kong therapy. Cuteness abounds!
