Pet Talk: The dog days of summer 06/04/2021

Pet Talk: The dog days of summer

With temperatures on the rise make sure your dogs are safe in the heat! The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends:

* Leaving your pets at home and out of the heat if possible
* Provide different temperature zones in your house for your pets comfort, like an air conditioned room or cool basement floor.
* Never leave your pet in the car, even if it is in the shade or the windows are cracked. Cars can overheat quickly to deadly temperatures.
* If it’s hot outside for you, it’s even hotter for your pet
* Take walks during the cooler parts of the day
* Avoid hot surfaces, such as asphalt, that can burn your dogs paws
* Make sure they have access to plenty of water!
* Recognize the signs of heat stress

The link provided also shares great information about protecting your dogs from the heat and the dangers of heat stroke!

Pet Talk: The dog days of summer The approach of the warm season brings a spike both in temperatures and in cases of heatstroke in dogs.

A lot of cats do not appreciate their cat carriers and can cause quite a battle or injury for their owners trying to get them into a carrier and brought to the vets. Recently a client of ours brought their cat in a carrier with an easier loading option. This carrier is also great since it has a barrier in the inside that doesn’t allow the cat to turn around and get back into the carrier once pulled out which allows us to be able to access them safer and easier! This owner found theirs from Fleet Farm! Link provided. (https://www.fleetfarm.com/detail/calm-carrier-w-e-z-load-drawer/0000000365807?bc=11232|11269|11289)

⚠️This week is national poison prevention week!⚠️That being said, Easter is soon approaching and you may have those beautiful Easter Lillies on display in your home. As you may enjoy these, you should be aware that they do pose danger to your household cats! These plants are extremely poisonous to cats and will cause acute kidney failure and even death. Biting or eating part of a leaf, stem, petal, licking pollen or drinking the water they sit in can severely harm cats. This link to the AVMA website (https://www.avma.org/resources/pet-owners/petcare/household-hazards ) talks more about other household dangers to be aware of, especially since spring is here, such as lawn fertilizers, rodent poison, plants, cleaners and more!
