Treehouse Almonds

Have you ever wondered how almonds are pollinated? Yes? Well, it's your lucky day!

Here's how it works: every almond you eat exists because a bee pollinated an almond blossom. While they’re searching for a pollen snack, bees gather pollen on their fuzzy legs and bodies and then head for the next flower. A single bloom can’t produce an almond on its own, so bees move the pollen from flower to flower, providing all of the genetic material necessary for the fruit to set. Without bees, we wouldn’t have any almonds. What a loss that would be(e)!

With almond bloom progressing in the Central Valley, beekeepers have placed colonies in orchards to pollinate the crop. But demand for bees may be close to outstripping supply—and that has contributed to thefts of bee colonies. Beekeepers in both the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys have reported losing hives. A Butte County Sheriff deputy who investigates bee thefts says beekeepers and farmers must work closely together to prevent bees from being stolen. Ag Alert story: http://ow.ly/DIJA30nLhhy

Massive Loss Of Thousands Of Hives Afflicts Orchard Growers And Beekeepers

It’s been a tough start heading into 2019

Here we go again.

HIVE THEFT ALERT!!!

8 beehives were stolen from an apiary yard belonging to Harold Landon owner of Buzz’s Bees in the Richvale area off of Richvale Highway and Aguas Frias Rd between 01/21/2019 and 01/28/2019. The suspect (s) stole the hives and left the pallets and feeder cans behind. It is believed the suspect(s) either carried the hives out by hand or used a flatbed with a boom on it to load the hives.

On the evening of 01/28/2019, the owner of the hives was at the apiary yard getting ready to load bees for almond pollination. An older model late 1980’s Chevrolet or similar, 14-foot flatbed truck with a boom on it drove up to the yard after dark at approximately 6:00 PM. When the driver of the vehicle saw there were people in the yard they drove off and out of the area and never returned. It is believed based off of the evidence and circumstances that this vehicle may have been involved in the prior theft and was returning to steal more beehives. It is also believed that this vehicle will continue to search for hives to steal as almond pollination is upon us in California.

The pictures attached show the pallets the hives were on, as well as what the hives look like and the brand associated with them. The hives are 10 frame hives, consisting of 3 shallow boxes, painted white, with “H.N. Landon” branded on them. The photographs of the flatbed and boom provided is NOT the actual flatbed and only provided to show what the suspicious flatbed looks like.

If you have any further information please contact Deputy Jay Freeman at the Butte County Sheriff’s Office at 530-538-7322 or by email at [email protected] or Buzz Landon at 530-624-3361.
