New York's City Hall Loop station was one of the city's first 28 subway stations. Constructed and operated by the Interborough Transit Company as the southern terminal of New York's first subway line, the station opened in 1904.
Rafael Guastavino designed the station, employing Romanesque Revival architecture. The beautiful curved platform proved impractical as train cars and trains grew in length. Also, the City Hall station was very close to the Brooklyn Bridge station, where most subway riders disembarked. So the City Hall station closed at the end of 1945.
Various uses (e.g. transit museum, restaurant) have been proposed for the station, but cost and security concerns have derailed the plans. Nonetheless, the magazine Travel and Leisure, in 2009, named the station the 12th most beautiful subway station in the world.
Photo of station under construction is a public domain photo from the Library of Congress; photo of one of the station's skylights was taken in 2018 by Wikimedia user Rhododendrites and is used via Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 license; photo of postcard is in the public domain.
Visit us today! We're open 9am-4pm!
