Vischer Ferry Nature Preserve, Riverview Rd, Rexford, NY 12148

Although they do allow duck hunting for the first seven days of the season, I've never heard a shot fired there and have ridden the preserve straight through December. So, I'm putting it on the list of 'no-hunting' trail rides. Beautiful walk/trot ride any time of year. Good cantering/loping zones on the grassy trails. You can get an 8-12 mile ride in riding end to end.

Park in the field across from the Whipple Bridge (recent weather conditions permitting). Otherwise, You can park in the small Ferry Drive lot, but please be mindful of other patrons so the Preserve stewards continue to allow riding at VFNP.

Saratoga National Historical Park (aka Saratoga Battle Field), Stillwater, NY
Another 'hunting free zone for trail riding' opportunity. There is a specifically marked, out-and-back horse trail (white pickets with an H imprinted on them/highlighted in pink on the map in the comments) that's about 7-8 miles round trip.

Best to stick to the horse trail. Rangers frown on horses using the hiking trails, particularly the 'blue' marked Wilkenson trail on the map. Also, do not ride up to the visitor center. This really annoys the rangers and they will come out, remind you to stay on the horse trail or be banned from the park. And they enforce the rules.

The horse trails are good dirt and grass trails (can be a bit spongy/muddy in places if there's been a lot of rain) with rolling vistas and lots of history. It's a really fun ride with plenty of places for a lope or hand gallop.

EZ parking at the Route 423/32 entrance (marked horse trailer parking on the trail map) where the horse trail starts and ends near the Neilsen House. It's 'around the corner' from the main entrance on Route 32.
Happy Trails!

A very special thanks for all she has done!

The show ring in the Toyota Coliseum this weekend was officially named in honor of Naomi Blumenthal, the longtime horse show superintendent at the NYS Fair in Syracuse.
Naomi was "a great person who we could call on at any time," Fair Director Troy Waffner said at the ceremony unveiling the sign, which will go under the judge's booth. "She knew every inch of this Coliseum. She's done so much to promote the horse show industry, so much to help out the Fair, to make the horse shows what they are today ... She was tough but she was fair. She was a great person."
Blumenthal died in December 2020.

The New York State Assembly has passed a bill banning the slaughter of racehorses and racehorse breeding stock. The measure now goes to Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is expected to sign it into law.
“This legislation positions New York as the national leader when it comes to responsibly protecting our retired racehorses,” NY Racing Association President & CEO David O'Rourke told the Thoroughbred Daily News.
Joe Appelbaum, president of the NY Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association called the bill "historic legislation benefitting horses."
The measure also requires that racehorses be microchipped, and sets up tax incentives for Thoroughbred aftercare donations.
