Cosmic Gumbo

Thanks for the support in May to those who attended one of our gigs.
We are taking most of June off to refresh our repertoire & do some traveling, (individually), and will be back, at Paniolo Santa Maria BBQ on June 27. See you there!

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Sonny Rollins. The Saxophone Colossus died this afternoon at his home in Woodstock, NY at the age of 95. “I think when the creative person ends, he continues in the next existence. I’m a person who believes this life isn’t the be-all and end-all of everything. A spiritual person doesn’t feel like that.” –S.R. (2009)

On this day in 1971, Marvin Gaye released "What’s Going On", a record that still feels startlingly alive. In its grooves, soul became more intimate, more political, more searching. Gaye took the vocabulary of Motown and opened it toward something wider: a meditation on grief, war, community, faith, and survival.

It is difficult to overstate what this album meant. It was elegant without retreating from reality, and compassionate without losing urgency. 55 years later, "What’s Going On" remains one of those rare works that speaks to its own time and to ours with equal force.
