Within his first month at one of our Grand Rapids clients, Trevor was promoted twice. Now he is training an intern on electrical and plumbing skills. He does not own a car.

That last detail almost does not matter anymore, because WSI Grand Rapids just gave Trevor a bicycle.

We are proud to announce our new partnership with Upcycle Bikes, a program months in the making thanks to the persistence of our own Ben Heyn. Through this initiative, WSI associates facing transportation barriers can receive a free bike, helmet, light, and lock, no strings attached. When a transportation issue threatens someone's attendance, our team assesses the need, completes a short intake process, and gets equipment into their hands.

Upcycle Bikes also handles minor repairs and charges only for parts.
The goal is simple: a flat tire or a missing ride should never be the reason a great employee loses a great job.

Trevor is proof that the right support at the right moment changes trajectories. We are grateful to Upcycle Bikes for building a program worthy of people like him, and to Ben for refusing to let a good idea stay just an idea.

A 91-cent gap separates Michigan gas prices from Indiana's right now. Kalamazoo and Sturgis are still winking at $4.50 a gallon. Just across the state line: $3.48.

The reason is not complicated. Indiana suspended both its gasoline excise tax and its sales tax on gas -- 59 cents a gallon in relief -- while Michigan lawmakers are still in discussion mode.

Indiana has roads too.

This Pride Month, our WSI team showed up and showed out for our community at Kalamazoo Pride on June 6th. Our DEI team provided face painting, fellowship, and a whole lot of fun. May is National Bike Month, and this week is National Bike Week -- so it felt right to share something we have been quietly building in Grand Rapids.

Our Senior Account Manager Ben Heyn, connected with Upcycle Bikes Executive Director Rick Armbruster at a local Resource Fair at Aquinas College and turned a conversation into a real program. Upcycle Bikes refurbishes adult bikes and distributes them free of charge to individuals facing financial hardship -- 83% of their recipients rely on that bike as their primary transportation for daily needs.

Now, when a WSI associate in GR faces a transportation barrier, we can offer them a free refurbished bike -- helmet, lights, and lock included.

Transportation is one of the top reasons workers miss shifts and eventually leave jobs. Rather than treating it as someone else's problem, Ben spent months building a solution that serves both our associates and our clients.

Reducing turnover starts before the first missed shift. That is what being a true workforce partner looks like.
