Dave Morel and I had a great visit with the crew at Front Runner Boats in Green Cove Springs, Florida Thursday, and then they took us fishing Friday out of St. Augustine in the awesome Front Runner 43 Catamaran. We caught a few dolphin and ended the day with a solid blackfin tuna. Thanks to everyone at Front Runner for a great couple of days. I even ran into my old friend Vaughn Cochran at dinner in his amazing Blackfly restaurant Thursday night! New Boats: Catch 27 Crossover

The all-new Catch 27 was designed from scratch for the owner who wants one boat that performs many different tasks well, hence the “Crossover” designation. The 27 brings together intelligent design, advanced engineering, and a laser focus on solving every conceivable problem. It’s built to excel from the shallow flats to the open ocean, from tournament fishing to hitting the sandbar with your family.

The hull was designed using computer simulations, particularly Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which offer unparalleled precision in observing and measuring phenomena that are hard to assess in real-world conditions. Rigorous simulations were pivotal in ensuring a ride that is safe, comfortable, and dry. Extensive testing and iterative design adjustments, spanning hundreds of hours, culminated in a highly efficient, shallow-draft hull with a comfortable, dry ride. The ride quality is comparable to similar size, deep-V offshore boats under typical operating conditions.

All fiberglass parts are computer-designed, CNC cut, and fully engineered for optimal fit, finish, and durability. The hull, deck, and liner are vacuum-infused with the highest-quality vinylester resin, state-of-the-art materials, and premium gelcoat. A hydraulic jack plate comes pre-drilled for mounting Power-Pole shallow water anchors, and ZipWake Interceptor Blades come standard as well. They significantly outperform traditional trim tabs, providing more lift with less drag, but traditional trim tabs are available upon request.

Two large, 60-inch-long, insulated fish boxes lie in the aft cockpit deck, draining to a diaphragm waste pump, and there’s also an insulated coffin box that drains overboard under the spacious lounge seat for two in front of the console. An insulated fish box/storage compartment in the forward step drains overboard as well.

Two livewells in the transom area hold 39 gallons and 20 gallons respectively and feature premium Gemlux plumbing to adjust water levels or pressurize the wells to protect bait. Clear acrylic lids let in light, while non-skid surfaces on the lids double as a rear casting platform. A light blue gelcoat interior helps calm the bait. Large well openings facilitate clearing cast nets and storing five-gallon buckets when not in use.

The Catch 27 comes standard with a sleek and modern hard top with a spacious upper helm station that accommodates two people, with dashboard space for a 12-inch MFD. The upper helm is easily accessed via recessed steps flush with the console, featuring innovative tackle storage between the steps. And exclusive to Catch Boatworks, the trolling motor stores neatly in a compartment under the gunnel when not in use, clearing the bow for unobstructed visibility and access. Standard power comes from a 425 hp V10 Mercury Verado with a 25-inch shaft, with standard digital throttle, shift, and steering. Twin Mercury V6 200 hp engines are optional.

In Rehab: 1996 Action Craft 1880 SE Stu Apte Edition

Life in the Bahamas can be hard on a boat. Such is the case with this rehab project, a 1996 Action Craft that saw extensive use at the Walkers Cay Resort, taking the owners and their guests fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon with Capt. Gerald Rolle.
When Walkers closed in 2004, the boat was moved south to Crown Haven where Capt. Sidney Thomas, another former Walkers flats guide, took control of its management. John Abplanalp, son of the former owner of Walkers, Bob Abplanalp, used the boat frequently, fishing with friends and clients under Sidney’s guidance. But as time went by it became clear that the boat needed to be either retired or made over. Abplanalp chose the latter approach.

The boat was brought to Stuart, Florida and underwent a complete rehab, from new power, paint and electronics to a total rewire. The hull was still perfectly sound but everything in it had to go. Abplanalp enlisted the aid of Capt. John Corbin of Stuart, who oversaw the extensive renovations. Mike Flavin of Master Marine Repair helped put the finishing touches on the boat and Yamaha supplied an F150 for power. They also worked with several metal fabricators to create a fairly elaborate poling tower and raised forward rail to facilitate fly casting, even in choppy conditions like you sometimes encounter on the Little Bahama Bank.

“What a gift and honor it has been to be able to preserve, restore, and enhance a wonderful little skiff that opened the northern Bahamas for us in a fly-fishing sense,” Abplanalp said. “We quickly evolved into bringing everything from five-weights for wading for big, tailing bonefish, to 11-weights for tarpon, and every weight imaginable in between for everything else. While not a modern poling skiff, the Peaceful Easy Reelin’ (Abplanalp’s daughter, Chessie, came up with the name as they are both huge Eagles fans) has enough modern innovation to let us go from tailing bonefish, albeit we might have to get out and wade for them, to pursuing other nearshore species. And the support and encouragement we had from friends old and new was SO worth the effort!”

After some extensive sea trials, the boat was sent back to Capt. Thomas in Crown Haven, where it reentered service chasing bonefish on the flats. It should be good for another 30 years of great catches and memories!

Capt. Robert Trosset III, Finz Dive and Tackle

In 2011, Robert Trosset III found a niche in Key West that no one was servicing, and founded Finz Dive and Tackle, specializing in spearfishing and small SCUBA diving charters. Having worked in the dive industry for years Robert knew that people wanted more time underwater, more dive locations, more fish, and more fun.

Finz currently runs three boats with a wide variety of trips from simple two-tank reef and wreck dives to all day spearfishing adventures. He has a 34 Freeman, a Parker, and the Park Shark, built by Razorhead Boats of Louisiana. The most specialized trip Finz does is to the Dry Tortugas National Park. The trip includes a private guided tour of Fort Jefferson, followed by up to three dives inside the park.

While not a conventional center console, the Park Shark is the perfect vessel on which to experience the National Park on any time of the year. This aluminum 35-foot catamaran with an enclosed cabin and air conditioning provides a dry and comfortable ride. Cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It also has a Dometic DG3 Gyro Stabilizer that keeps the vessel calm and collected on the 70 mile ride each way.

“Our trips are custom tailored to each group that joins us,” Trosset said. “From novice to expert our small size lets us adapt and provide the best possible trip, not just some cookie-cutter dive trip.”
