It was my first attempt at sourdough bagels. Next time, I'll use fresher sourdough, which is more active sourdough. ChatGPT wrote a little poem for this first adventure 😁
The Tale of the Sleepy Dough
I mixed and kneaded, strong and true,
A batch of bagels—what could go askew?
With careful hands, I shaped them round,
Expecting plumpness, golden-browned.
But oh! My dough was slow to rise,
A sleepy batch, to my surprise.
Instead of bagels, proud and grand,
I baked some rings, a sight unplanned!
Yet still, they tell a story sweet,
Of patience, trials, and dough’s defeat.
Not every bake turns out just right,
But each one brings a new delight.
So here’s to sourdough, wild and free,
A lesson wrapped in bakery—
For even rings, though not my goal,
Can warm the heart and feed the soul.

“Pies are round, not square!” This is the argument given to me after teaching a middle school math class about the formula for the area of a circle, pi times radius squared. I love teaching math but the time had come to slow down a little with my husband and enjoy the life around us.
