Fantastic first day here in Bad Ischl, Austria at the FCEI conference, which attracts delegates and experts (both professionals AND parents recognised as such here, and lived experience valued!) from all over the world. Looking forward to seeing what Day Two brings… so many great presentations on the agenda.

The yellow shoes made it to Bad Ischl! (Uma Soman - you did insist! 😂). Ready for the main FCEI Conference, starting today after a day of workshops and pre-meetings yesterday. Great to be here and looking forward to showcasing all our beautiful AVID Language books. And yes, it’s STILL raining and still spectacular nestled here in amongst the forested slopes of Bad Ischl.

Probably the most scenic backdrop to any display table AVID Language has ever had… if only it was sunny, you would see the gorgeous forested hillsides rising up behind this most spectacular of venues. Ready for the FCEI Conference! (FCEI = Family Centred Early Intervention for Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing).

When I say the rain has been relentless since we all arrived here in this beautiful place, I mean RELENTLESS. But nonetheless, what a spectacular setting for the FCEI Conference, taking place here at the Kongress und Theatrehaus here in Bad Ischl, Austria. Some fantastic pre-conference workshops today, special reunions with colleagues and friends, and tomorrow the main conference kicks off.

🤝 Partnering to expand deaf representation, awareness and language-learning through children’s books!

💡 It started with the CIICA Global Summit back in 2024, where I met Jarle Franceus, Lecturer in Speech Therapy & Audiology at Artevelde University of Applied Sciences. We immediately sensed an opportunity for collaboration in the translation of some AVID Language books into Dutch.

📚 Jarle and I initially worked together in a private capacity to translate my two little Ling Ling Bird (a.k.a Pip de Papagaai) books, and very soon this led to bigger things: a collaboration with the Speech and Language department at Artevelde University. Students working with Jarle chose two of our books, “C.I. Quest” (“Boer Bram en het CI-avontuur”) and “Mr Mellow Likes Yellow” (“Meneer Moreel is dol op geel”) to use as the anchors for their thesis projects, focusing on fostering communication development of children with hearing loss through storybooks. Inter alia, the project involved translating the books into Dutch, while retaining the language development strategies which are woven into the stories.

🎉 Congratulations and thanks to Sienna Hendrickx, Annika Kuypers, Xan Delobel and Lara Vannieuwenhuyse for their thoughtful and sensitive translation work, and wishing you all the very best of luck for your graduation and ongoing careers.

🛒 These Dutch versions of our books are now available from Amazon and many other online bookstores. I will also be proudly showcasing them in person at the upcoming FCEI Conference in Bad Ischl, Austria.

🤩 Thanks to Paola Brolis-Pistone for her fabulous Italian translation of "Ling Ling Bird Hears with his Magic Ears".

🦜 "Paolino il Papagallino sente con le sue orecchie magiche" is out now and available from Amazon and many other online bookstores, the first in our Italian series of "Libri illustrati sulla diversità, per bambini sordi e udenti".

🩷 It's particularly special having Paola translate this book, because when her lovely daughter, Everly, was younger and just embarking on her language-learning journey, it was her favourite book... So many stories that combine to make AVID Language what it is are so personal, and therefore all the more precious. Thank you, Paola, for your translation work and thank you, Everly, for being a fan!

🦜 Ling Ling Bird becomes Pássaro Piu in Portuguese!

🤩 Thank you to Pedro Brás da Silva and Rosária Pereira for their fabulous translation work on two of our best-selling books. Their experience and expertise as an auditory verbal therapist and speech and language therapist respectively have ensured that, in translation, these two fun little storybooks for very early listeners still retain their inbuilt language development strategies.

🆕 I'm thrilled to be showcasing these new Portuguese versions at the FCEI Conference next week, and they are also already available from Amazon and other online bookstores:
