I live in Ockers Gardens, in Oakdale. There are many here who would like a grocery store within walking distance. Is this a possibility for the near future?

Also, we have a pond here and we would love it if it could be cleaned up. It's not good for the wildlife and it's an eyesore to our community. Can you help us with this?
Great community service and learning opportunity for Bay Shore students!

The Great South Bay will only be as healthy as the 50 creeks leading into it. On Saturday, Oct 17th from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM, Bay Shore Creek Defender Tom Kain is teaming up with Keep Islip Clean for the 35th Annual Coastal Clean Up to clear the Penatquit Creek of debris and let it flow freely. We will document the litter found and submit it to the Ocean Conservancy which collects data worldwide.

All are welcome - scouts, students, families, local organizations and company teams! Community service available. Bags & pickers provided thanks to the generous support of our local sponsors. Please bring your own work gloves, waterproof boots and/or waders. Activity level ranges from easy to strenuous. Masks required when social distancing not possible.

Meet up is at the end of Aletta Place (behind Napa Auto Parts) at 10:00 am sharp.

Our Super Volunteer Bill Raftery did multiple cleanups around Great River and East Islip throughout the holidays. It's a close contest, but a saddle by Fern and Hawthorne Avenues in E.I. may be his most unusual find this week. Thanks, Bill, for all that you do!

Tiffany DiBenedetto and Zach Reilly, aka The Brook Street Duo, led a group of KIC Junior Commissioners on a cleanup of Freeman Avenue in Islip. What. A. Mess. The group pulled out more than 45 tires from the wooded area off the road, along with litter and other debris. It was a big effort and the team's hard work is very appreciated!

WOW! Kiersten Galli worked on numerous KIC projects to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award and the result is truly impressive. She collected and redeemed 2809 cans/bottles...in just two weeks! Her ambitious recycling project resulted in the donation to KIC of 1126 garbage bags and 1572 disposable gloves. She bought these supplies with $350 earned through recycling and a $50 coupon from Home Depot in Central Islip.

Not enough? Kiersten designed an information packed brochure about litter, recycling and their impact on our environment and community. She presented the information to fellow Girl Scouts. Still not enough? She participated in numerous KIC litter events.

Kiersten, we are so proud of you and grateful for your support!

Video from Team Captain Bill Raftery showing the importance of KIC cleanups.
The recent storm sent water down the Overlook Drive drainage ravine. Bill led a team of volunteers in a March cleanup of the area, when it was dry. Without that cleanup, all the litter that filled 80 bags would have washed into the Great South Bay. This is another example of how volunteers improve our shared environment.

What's this about? Sixteen...16!...shopping carts filled with junk, but neatly placed. This is on Hawthorne Avenue, by the Great River Train Station. Thank you Town of Islip - Government DPW for removing this eyesore.
UPDATE: A resident who happens to be a KIC volunteer saw these carts and put them in rows to make it easier for pick up. Aren't KIC volunteers the BEST people?
