What is FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?

Please join us Sunday, April 24, 2022 at North Haven Gardens, when our speaker will be Dallas County Master Gardener Kevin Burns. Kevin will give us a presentation on growing herbs and suggestions for using them in cooking.
Refreshments 2:30pm , 3:00pm meeting start
Kevin has been gardening for over 20 years. His passion for gardening began shortly after he and his wife were married and toured some formal gardens in Germany on their honeymoon. When he got home, he realized their backyard consisted of turf, a mimosa tree, and a chain link fence. He developed a plan for turning their yard into a pleasurable garden and it’s been evolving ever since.
Kevin loves native Texas perennial plants and roses. His wife suspects the reason he likes native perennials is because he is cheap and hates buying new plants each season. Along with having a green thumb Kevin tries to be as “green” as practical by keeping the families carbon footprint to a minimum. This includes composting, recycling, rainwater harvesting, making their own laundry soap, and using a clothesline instead of a dryer.
Kevin and his wife own a small 55-acre ranch in the Texas Hill Country outside of Fredericksburg which they run as a Bed and Breakfast. The property is a designated Wildlife Management Area. Along with providing sustenance to the native wild animals living on the property, they plant 25-75 new native trees and sow native grasses and wildflowers annually in an effort to return the property to its natural pre-cattle ranching state.
Along with gardening Kevin’s interests include cooking, travel, photography and an antique Alfa Romeo. He has loves cats and lives with 3 of them. Kevin and his wife try to always visit gardens and arboretums for inspiration and photographs wherever they travel.
Kevin joined DCMGA and the Speakers Bureau in 2011. His talks include: Texas Native and Adapted Plants, Wicked Weeds, Composting, Texas Wildflowers, Growing and Cooking with Herbs, Groundcovers

Did you know that the North Texas region is reported to grow by 90% over the next 50 years?😱📈

Water conservation and reuse will provide for nearly 30% of the region’s future water supplies. That’s why NTMWD, Tarrant Regional Water District, and City of Dallas Water Utilities have come together to provide conservation resources for its residents!

Check out Natural Awakenings Dallas Metroplex Magazine’s recent article where each water district shares free resources, as well as its plan to meet growing needs. Head here to read the full article ➡️ https://www.nadallas.com/2021/09/30/369829/water-scarcity-in-north-texas

Phew! We had a busy and wonderful three days of hosting the 2021 Southern Family Farmers & Food Systems Conference at Texas State University. Even in this odd year, we brought in 339 people to teach and learn about sustainable agriculture, farm finances, agricultural research, and so much more. We were able to bring in over a dozen speakers through Zoom, provide masks, sanitizer, and overflow rooms, and somehow fit all the pieces together despite the odds being against us. Through our grants and with help from our outreach partners, SPI awarded over 70 scholarships (& still tabulating) to historically underserved producers to attend.

SPI is endlessly grateful to our partners, Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance & Council for Healthy Food Systems, without which the event would not be the same! We also want to give a huge thank you to all our speakers, moderators, exhibitors, donors, volunteers, and attendees.

Finally, a special thank you to all of our sponsors:

Thank you Natural Awakenings Dallas Metroplex Magazine for this great feature article on the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance and our work!

“This is not a left-wing or a right-wing issue, it’s not a libertarian or socialist issue. There are so many things that divide us as people, but our bills end up with fun people working together—liberal, left-wing urban Dems pairing up with libertarian, right wing constitutionalists from rural communities,” McGeary concludes. “It’s the outgrowth about what’s so great about this movement. We need to find real solutions instead of drawing battle lines in the sand.”
