MASA CURATOR INCUBATOR PROJECT, FEB. 8-MARCH 15! Sign Up at www.masamedia.org
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Media Arts Santa Ana (MASA)’s Curator Incubator Project provides curatorial training and exhibition opportunities and imparts a community-based curatorial vision that reflects the values, history, aesthetics and aspirations of Santa Ana’s multicultural arts community.
This project engages noted community-based curators, gallery directors and consultants to teach Santa Ana residents how to develop, design, mount, promote, fund and premiere original exhibits with a strong curatorial vision that relates to and impacts their community. Participants will share their project visions via exhibits in MASA’s MASARTE Gallery and engage in a larger discussion about interconnections between their exhibits and the community.
Invited instructors include ALESSANDRA MOCTEZUMA (San Diego Mesa College), TYLER STALLINGS (Orange Coast College Frank M Doyle Arts Pavilion, Laguna Art Museum), ERIKA HIRUGAMI (CuratorLove, UNDOC+Collective), HEATHER BOWLING (John Wayne Airport Arts Museum, Brea Gallery), POCHA PEÑA (MASARTE Gallery, Pocharte Gallery) and VICTOR PAYAN (MASARTE Gallery, RazaFest).
MASARTE Gallery’s artistic vision is rooted in community, serving not only as a showcase for community-based work by artists working in technology-related forms such as Augmented Reality, immersive experiences, multimedia and traditional visual art, but also as a curator incubator, providing training and real-world experience in curating exhibits to emerging artists, artists of color, working class and immigrant artists and others historically or economically excluded from expensive or exclusionary arts schools, MFA programs or commercial galleries.
MASARTE Gallery furthers MASA’s mission of creating equitable opportunities for historically excluded artists by serving as a curator incubator, providing workshops and classes designed to teach how to develop, mount, promote and produce exhibits. Working in conjunction with our TVGB digital space, this opens the possibility for artists to create video, augmented reality and multimedia work in the maker space and present it in the gallery next door.
Only 17.3% of Santa Ana residents over 25 years old have a Bachelors degree or higher. The lack of access to higher education positions Santa Ana residents at a significant disadvantage to entering the arts sector and receiving formal training as curators.
MASARTE Gallery’s programming features immersive experiences, augmented reality, multimedia works and community-driven exhibitions, providing a vital new voice in the region's arts community.
