Playing a key role in crucial research

Here is the article about Evita Woolsey who has been an RA in our lab for the past three years - it's a great story about how undergrads can get involved in research as part of their college experience!

Playing a key role in crucial research Evita Woolsey came from California to the University of Iowa to pursue her interest in speech and hearing science. Through her involvement in an NIH-funded research project, the undergraduate is assessing children across the state and making connections with researchers on campus and beyond.

Improving outcomes for children with hearing loss

We recently had an article written up through the University of Iowa about our longitudinal Outcomes of Children with Hearing Loss study (as well as companion article about one of our undergrad RAs). The article includes some great interviews with some of the parents and kids who have participated in our research over the years. We are so proud of the work we've been doing over the past decade!

Improving outcomes for children with hearing loss University of Iowa researchers have been following 300 children with hearing loss for nearly 14 years, and their findings are changing lives, the field of audiology, and public policy.

Another week and another student spotlight!

Kaylee Deisbeck is one of our newest lab members! Kaylee is a sophomore from North Liberty, IA. She is helping with data entry for the LOLAH grant. Kaylee has most enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside upper classmen, graduate students, and professors while in the lab. She is also an SAA and NSSHLA member and volunteers for Dance Marathon. Kaylee is considering pursuing her Doctorate of Audiology, but also still considering a career as a Speech-Language Pathologist. In her free time you can find Kaylee enjoying time on her family’s boat, cheering on the Hawkeye or cuddling with her dogs Walter and Beatrice!

Do you have a child that is a middle or high school student with hearing loss?
The Listening and Language in Children Lab at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is conducting a research study on listening fatigue in middle and high school-aged students with hearing loss.

This study requires the participation of the child to complete the survey with the consent of the parent or legal guardian. The survey will ask questions about listening environments during the school day, listening fatigue, and school accommodations. Completion of the survey will take about 30 minutes and participants will have the option to be entered to win 1 of 10 $25 Amazon gift cards at the end of the survey. Participation is completely voluntary, and participants may quit the survey at any time.

Your participation is greatly appreciated. Questions can be directed to Dr. Kelsey Klein at [email protected].

We have some new additions to the Pediatric Audiology Lab this year!

Introducing…Colette Reiche! Colette is an undergraduate junior from Crystal Lake, Illinois. This fall, she joined the lab as an undergraduate research assistant. She has the amazing opportunity to assist an audiology student from the Pediatric Audiology Lab with their capstone project. So far, she’s learned how to administer hearing screenings and different standardized assessments. She plans on attending graduate school for speech-language pathology but is keeping an open mind for audiology. Outside of academics, Colette is the co-fundraising chair for NSSLHA and participants in other student organizations such as, Best Buddies and Device Advice. In her free time, she loves to spend time outside playing tennis with her friends and family.

The start of the fall semester is just a few weeks away! We're looking forward to having our undergrads and grad students back on campus. As part of the back-to-school process, we're going to introduce some of our new lab members, starting with Morgan Filippini!

Morgan is a rising undergraduate senior from Spring Valley, Illinois. She has served as a research assistant in the Pediatric Audiology Lab for the summer of 2021. Throughout the summer she has scored and prepared test materials, performed speech and language testing with participants, and traveled around Iowa, Minnesota, as well as North Carolina. She plans on attending graduate school next year to receive her master's degree in speech-language pathology. In her free time, Morgan enjoys spending time with family and playing board games. Recently, she has started watching all the Marvel movies and tv shows with her sister.

Expanding the Role of Educational Audiologists After a Failed Newborn Hearing Screening: A Quality Improvement Study

We are so excited to see our latest paper in press in the American Journal of Audiology! Caitlin Sapp, Jon Stirn, and Tammy O'Hollearn from the Iowa Department of Public Health contributed to this manuscript on a joint quality improvement project between the Iowa Early Hearing Detection and Intervention program and educational audiologists in the state of Iowa. We found that involving educational audiologists in the diagnostic ABR process improved the quality of EHDI services for Iowa families, including an increase in the timeliness of audiology service delivery, a decrease in the distances that rural Iowan families had to travel for a diagnostic hearing evaluation, and an increase in the likelihood of infants receiving on-guideline audiology care.

Expanding the Role of Educational Audiologists After a Failed Newborn Hearing Screening: A Quality Improvement Study Purpose Lack of timely and proximal access to diagnostic hearing evaluation using auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing hampers the effectiveness of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs in the United States. This study measured the impact of a state-based quality-improvement....
