I moved to Iowa city Iowa for medical reasons I really appreciate what these guys are doing and need for medical emergencies since my bowel perferation 2 years ago my health has not been the same thank guys for making things easy when you respond to my calls. Bruce Leibold
They arrived within minutes of my call, took my vitals immediately, asked which hospital I wanted to go to, and proceeded to deliver me to the UI ER. They alerted the cardiac team there and I was given an EKG immediately. They were so kind and pleasant. I will never forget how good they were to me.
We want to think the two EMS providers that came to the Lake MacBride Campground and help take care of our son last night. He is doing great and can’t stop talking about the ambulance 🚑 ride! Your service is greatly appreciated!
CONGRATULATIONS to Sandy Heick on her award of IEMSA (Iowa Emergency Medical Services) Individual Paramedic of the Year!!! We are so fortunate for her dedication to the service at the local and state levels. She is hard-working and expects little back in return. She sets high standards for her work ethic and quality service. Thank You Sandy!!!
Iowa City Public Library community CPR training put on by JCAS.

[05/20/21]   EMS as an Essential Service funding bill passed the Senate and House tonight unanimously with compromises and is going to the Governors desk to be signed. A big win for EMS in the State of Iowa. Thanks Representative Bobby Kaufmann for all the years of hard work getting it started that finally paid off. Thanks also to all the Representatives and Senators that finally saw the bill through and Governor Reynolds for agreeing to support it.

[04/29/21]   Johnson County is very fortunate to have a high quality EMS system in place, but other rural areas are not which taxes our EMS system to help cover. Please reach out to your Senators before the session ends as the current EMS as an Essential Service legislation is about to sit without a floor vote through another legislative session in the Senate, despite passing the House unanimously. In some areas EMS may not make it through another legislative session without sustainable funding.

Legislative Call-to-Action
EMS Action Alert on Essential Services Bill

IEMSA Priorities Moving Through The Legisaltive Process!

Two issues IEMSA is supporting are getting attention in the Iowa House of Representatives right now! Please find your State Representative (we may ask you to contact your Senator later!) and email and let him/her know that you support making EMS an essential service with funding to make that designation possible. Acknowledge in your email that staffing is the other side of the coin that will continue to be a challenge but that these pieces of legislation set the foundation we need to begin addressing the challenges of providing excellent EMS coverage statewide. Also, please feel free to mention that you support HF 144, increasing the individual tax credit for volunteer fire, EMS, and reserve officers from $100 to $200.

HF 562 by Ways and Means Chairperson Lee Hein and championed by Rep. Bobby Kaufmann is our essential services bill. Although there have been some changes made to address some concerns by interest groups and the Senate, we are in favor of the bill and appreciate that it still accomplishes the task of making local funding sources available as an essential service. This is a big deal and a HUGE part of funding EMS in rural Iowa! Passed Committee unanimously and eligible for floor debate.

HF 144 by Rep. Bossman increases the individual tax credits for volunteer fire, EMS, and reserve peace officers from $100 to $200. Passed Committee unanimously and eligible for floor debate.

Please support Iowa EMS across our state by contacting your legislators today!

World Restart A Heart

October 16th is World Restart a Heart Day!
Each year, more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside the hospital in the US. About 54% of those people do not receive bystander CPR which could double their chance of survival. World Restart a Heart Day aims to raise global awareness about the importance of bystander CPR.

Johnson County Ambulance Service

Setting the Standard - About Us

Johnson County Ambulance Service was established in 1966, providing exclusive 911 Emergency Medical Care to Johnson County and some of our surrounding communities. Initially operated by the Johnson County Sheriff Department, the service became its own department in 1970. In 1976 the service began providing advanced pre-hospital care through a joint venture with Mercy Hospital and the University of Iowa Hospital. The service became a Paramedic level ambulance service in 1981 and continues to provide this advanced level of service today.

Services are provided to over 150,000 residents, with the addition to thousands of people who travel into our district every day. With a response area of close to 623 square miles. The service boast a call volume of over 10,000 responses a year. The ambulance service has seen a steady increase calls for service every year, and continues to see the number rise. Johnson County Ambulance currently maintains a fleet of eight ambulances, staffing three of these units 24 hours a day. Two trucks are located at the Iowa City base near the downtown area, and one at the Coralville Fire Station #2. A fourth ambulance is located at a Iowa City Fire Station #4, and is staffed 2/3 time, with a fifth ambulance staffed on the West Side of Iowa City, and is staffed during peak call times throughout the week.

In addition to emergency ambulance services, Johnson County Ambulance also provides several non-emergency services. We provide non-emergency transports for hospitals, hospice, and other facilities in the area by request. We also provide special event coverage. We have been honored, for over 20 years to collaborate with the University of Iowa Athletic Department providing medical coverage at football, basketball, wrestling and other athletic events. Johnson County Ambulance also provides Special Event Standby for other agencies and services when requested.

Our department is dedicated to our community and our Public Relations division is active in sponsoring education, fundraisers, appearances, and many other events.
