PSA: Check your voter registration—if you’re a student here in ICIA remember you vote in the county and state in which you are registered….so this could mean a trip home on a Tuesday, OR a request for an absentee ballot (do it soon!) OR SIMPLY pop down to your local neighborhood card shop to change your registration to Johnson county. We have the forms, as well as support from a local get-out-the-vote organization to make sure voting on Tuesday, November 5 will be easy to do between classes!

Happy Women’s Equality Day, Paper Peeps! This is the day we commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote.

Twenty years ago, on August 26, 2004, we Paper Gals spent the day out on the sidewalk registering folks to vote. We snapped a Polaroid of each person and asked them to write why voting was important to them at the bottom. The answers ranged from dating strategy to healthcare and everything in between.

Each of us has our own motivations for voting, but in a democracy, we all have the obligation to do so.

Those 2004 photos are now hanging in the shop AND we are happy to help register anyone who wants to vote here in Iowa City in November. Just ask at the counter—we have the registration forms and can answer questions you may have.

In 2004, we thought so much was at stake, maybe that’s how it always feels, and really all we can do regardless is each cast our vote, or as Michelle Obama said last week, “Do Something.”
