Garrett Construction Company has a full time permanent position for an apprentice residential carpenter/laborer.
Would prefer knowledge of working with power tools, but will train. This has the potential to be a long term job for the right person. We are a full service remodeling company operating in Iowa City since 1989. We specialize in kitchens, baths, additions, historic preservation and whole house remodeling.

This can be hard work, but the reward of building something from a pile of lumber, or resurrecting a home to its former glory can be very rewarding. At the end of the day you have accomplished something you can see and be proud of.

Job duties include:
Heavy lifting (over 50 lbs.)
Demolition of existing structures and rooms. Installing dust partitions and surface protection.
Working on a ladders and scaffolding.
Working with power tool. Saws, sawzall, demo hammer, drills, shopvac, etc.
Working with hand tools. Hammers, sledge hammers, shovels, pry bars.
Learning carpentry skills. Framing, siding, window and door installation, roofing, installing cabinets, installing interior trim

Job requirements:
Experience preferred but not required
Self starter. Must be able show up for work on time every day.
Capable of working alone.
Good communication skills.
Must be neat and clean in appearance and work habits.
Must have valid drivers license

We exposed this cistern while excavating for an addition. Laid in red brick, arched roof for strength (we were driving on it prior to finding it) and expertly lined with plaster. This one was in excellent condition. It's always a little sad to fill them in.

Water pipe burst in Iowa City Landscaping 520 hwy 1 west last winter. We discovered the original old tin ceiling, salvaged it and built it into the new sales counter. Iron pipe on floor protects tin from shopping carts.

Garage addition on 1939 house in Manville Heights.

This home built in 1939 had a very small single stall garage with no access to the house from the garage.

We designed a 2 stall garage with access to the house through a new laundry/mud room located on back of the house.

We did this one a few years ago. Even the homeowner said, "I have the ugliest house in the neighborhood."
Not anymore!
We stripped the stucco exterior, added a third stall garage and rebuilt the entire exterior facade, including Natural Stone on the front and a new roof.
