My wife and I have been to many shows at the Englert in the past. We've loved it every time!! It is such a unique and beautiful space as it used to be an old movie/show theater and retains much of it's charm from days long past. Today, I sat down to order tickets for David Sedaris for this coming October 27th, and I confidently placed two front row tickets in my cart and placed my order, so happy that I got such good seats. Then I got a call at lunch from Craig at the Englert box office telling me that I had bought tickets for the very last row of the balcony, not the front row, and was wondering if I had made a mistake. Of course I had!!! Craig quickly changed my tickets to front row balcony, making sure to keep me out of the way of the big spot lights that are right in the middle. I am SUPER impressed with Craig and the Englert box office. What box office workers look at orders and guess that someone bought tickets in the wrong location and decides to call that patron, just to check!? This is service that goes above and beyond what is expected and I am super grateful for the care that Craig showed me today, it saved me a huge headache and embarrassment in October!! Thanks Craig and The Englert!!!!
Old capitol Chorus is participating in this annual event. Sharing the stage with other local performers. Squeeze this fun event onto your holiday schedule. Keep the whole world singing.
I would love to see Amis De Pierre Bensusan at the Englert. Let’s make that happen!
As always, Jeff Tweedy gave a great show last night. Glad he wasn't put off by the number of boomers that forgot that we stand up during encores. "Down in front"? Also, if the Englert has a no photo policy, could it make an honest attempt to enforce it?
I’m looking for 2 tickets to Capital Steps. Please IM me
I have 2 great center Aisle seats for tonight's sold Out show to Keb Mo... send me PM if interested.
Selling 3 tickets to the SOLD OUT Lake Street Dive concert on Monday, September 3rd... let me know if you're interested!

Designing a large scale mural is a feat in itself, but artists Antoine Williams and Donté K. Hayes wanted the Oracles of Iowa City murals to do more.

In collaboration with the Center for Afrofuturist Studies at Public Space One, the two artists approached this public art piece as an opportunity to start conversations, activate community, and create space for young artists of color in the area 🎨

We couldn't ask for better guests to wrap up season 2 of Best Show Ever ✨ Donté K. Hayes and Antoine Williams share a bit about their time with Public Space One's Center for Afrofuturist Studies. Then we hear from the Englert's own Savannah Lane as she speaks on her experience as a young woman working in the music industry and why she's stepping away from it.

We've also got the #exclusive with an unreleased Alyx Rush Music tune which is, as the kids would say, a certified banger 😤

Get to know this week's guests for the Englert's only virtual talk show, Screen Time. Tune in Thursday at 5:30 PM for all things technology, fashion, and identity 🕺

✨ Mirage a 24-year-old drag artist originally from New York, now living and creating in Iowa City. The best way she can think to describe herself is a glamorous do**us. She’s constantly straddling the line between tackiness and glamour always making sure to leave room for silliness. Not Campy, not comedy, not high fashion, but somewhere in the middle of it all.

✨ Garik Himebaugh is the founder of Eco-Stylist, the go-to marketplace for stylish and sustainable clothes. He got hooked on sustainable fashion after a chance meeting with the founder of an ethical brand, which then leads him down a path of countless hours of research into how unsustainable the fashion industry is. Garik emerged from all this research with a simple question: “can I put together stylish outfits with only sustainable brands?” Once he knew that he could, he wanted to help others dress like they give a damn—and Eco-Stylist was born! Garik is also an international speaker on sustainable fashion. He has an MBA from the University of Iowa and he loves coffee, climbing, and clothes.

✨ McGuirk currently teaches at the University of Iowa Magid Center for Undergraduate Writing. She holds an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a BA in English and Film Studies from the University of Notre Dame. McGuirk works at the Iowa City Bike Library and performs with the I.C. Kings drag troupe as Wiley Guyote.

✨ When Vilte Vaitkute (not pictured) was 10 when she was gifted a sewing machine, and things just sort of took off from there. Viltė studied Art in college, and spends much of her time thrifting, editing, and creating outfits for herself and for friends. To Viltė, dressing like you give a damn means knowing where your clothes come from, voting with your dollar, and only buying what makes you feel good. She believes it’s a good way to be part of something larger than ourselves, and it’s a way to empower ourselves in the process.

Our History

On September 26, 1912, husband and wife William & Etta Englert launched an institution when they opened The Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City, replacing what had once been a livery stable. They built the theater to rival the finest stage and movie houses throughout the Midwest and to establish a vibrant community gathering space for local and regional citizens.

Vaudeville acts from across the world performed on the stage and films - still an emerging art form at that time - were shown on the theater’s state-of-the-art projection equipment. These exciting events welcomed community members into the Englert’s 1,071 seats. Above the theatrics in the main hall, William and Etta resided on the theater’s second floor and provided housing for traveling artists on the third.

In 1920, William Englert passed away at 46 years old. Following his death, business partners A.H. Blank (from Des Moines) and Nate Chapman purchased the business in 1921. Chapman, who had been based in Des Moines, had moved to Iowa City just a year earlier when he and Blank purchased the storied Garden Theater cinema, which would later become The Varsity and then The Astro. The Blank and the Chapman families, through a line of committed descendants, would go on to steward the Englert’s existence for the remainder of the century.

After Nate Chapman died in 1925, his wife Dora continued to own and operate the theater alongside A.H. Blank. Dora’s brother, Al Davis, also assisted with managing the facility. On February 13, 1926, a fire nearly destroyed the Englert. Firemen fought to save the building as the blaze tore through the roof. Dora Chapman was there - as was Etta Englert - and she would later recount the scene to her grandchildren - Nathan, Katherine, and Barbara Chapman.
