Winter roads mean salt, snow, and ice—and that can mean trouble for your car! Regular car washes during winter aren’t just for looks—they help prevent rust and keep your vehicle in top shape. Here’s how:

✅ Wash every 5–10 days
✅ Car-safe soap and microfiber towels for drying
✅ Wash undercarriage with hose
✅ Prevent freezing by wiping down your car and spraying silicone on door seals and gaskets.
✅ Apply wax for extra protection

💡 Bonus Tips:
- Swap cloth mats for rubber to prevent moisture damage inside.
- Consider a detailing session for a clean and protected interior.

What Type of Gas Should You Use? ⛽

✅ Check Your Manual: Your car’s owner manual is the ultimate guide. Look for octane recommendations there, on the gas cap, or near the fuel gauge.
✅ Regular (87 Octane): Most cars are perfectly fine with regular gas — no need to splurge on premium if it’s not required.
✅ Premium (91/93 Octane): High-performance engines may need premium fuel to prevent preignition and maintain efficiency.
✅ Flex-Fuel Vehicles: If you see a yellow gas cap, your car can handle E85. Just remember it’s less fuel-efficient.
✅ Diesel Engines: Diesel fuel only! Gasoline can cause costly repairs.

💡 Pro Tip: Premium gas doesn’t mean better performance unless your car requires it. Save your money for road trips instead!

We understand how frustrating it can be when your windshield is covered in ice, frost, and snow when you’re trying to get out of the house in the morning. Here are some tips to handle your windshields in the winter:

✔️ Skip the hot water – It can crack your windshield! Instead, use a scraper, soft brush, or de-icer spray.
✔️ Don’t have an ice scraper? A credit card works as a great make-shift scraper.
✔️ Start your car and let the defroster do the work (but don’t leave it unattended!).
✔️ DIY de-icer: Mix 2 parts isopropyl alcohol, 1 part water, and a splash of dish soap.

Stay safe and protect your car this winter! Got windshield damage? We’re here to help. ❄️

❄️ Winter Tire Tips ❄️

You’ve invested in winter tires: great! Now it’s time to maintain your tires and continue to stay safe on the road this winter. Here are some tips to keep you rolling this season!

🚗 Check Your Tread - If your tread is less than 5/32, you should not be driving on snow covered roads. If your tread is 2/32, you should replace your tires immediately.

🛞 Install in Sets of 4 - You should always install your tires in sets of 4, never 2. Tires should be the same size, tread, and construction.

💨 Check Air Pressure: Be sure to check your tire’s air pressure at least monthly, especially during drastic temperature changes.

For a check-up, you can always count on Linder Tire. Come swing by at one of our 3 locations!

Did you know?

🚗 Today is National 55 MPH Day! 🚗

On January 2, 1974, President Nixon signed a law setting a national speed limit of 55 mph to save gas during the oil crisis and improve road safety. In 1995, Congress lifted all federal speed control with the National Highway System Designation Act, which gave that authority to the states. 🚦

Fun fact: South Dakota has the highest maximum speed limit, at 80 mph in some areas!

🚗 Winter Driving Emergencies: Be Prepared!

❄️ Stay with your car unless help is clearly visible nearby. Your vehicle provides shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you.

❄️ Conserve fuel and avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Run your engine for 5–10 minutes every hour to stay warm. Keep the exhaust pipe clear and crack a window for ventilation.

❄️ Be visible! Use hazard lights, reflective markers, or a dome light at night.

❄️ Stay warm. Bundle up with blankets or extra layers and use floor mats or newspapers for insulation.

❄️ Carry traction helpers like sand, kitty litter, or rock salt to get unstuck if needed.

❄️ Call for help. Dial 911 in an emergency or contact a roadside service like AAA for assistance.

❄️ Keep a charged phone and know your location for quicker help.

Stay safe and drive smart this winter! 🌨️

Beware of Black Ice ‼️

🌡️ When and Where Black Ice Forms
- Most common at night, early morning, or in shaded areas.
- Watch for it on bridges, overpasses, or tunnels—cold air cools these areas faster.
- Less-traveled roads are more prone to black ice.

👀 How to Spot Black Ice
- Roads may appear glossy or unusually smooth.
- Notice if other cars swerve unexpectedly—it could be a sign of black ice.

🚫 What to Do if You Hit Black Ice
- Do NOT brake suddenly—it can cause skidding.
- Keep your steering wheel steady and let your car glide in the direction you're traveling.
- Black ice patches are typically short; stay calm and in control.

⚠️ In Case of an Accident
- Evaluate whether it’s safer to stay in your car or exit.
- Consider your surroundings: traffic speed, temperature, and safety conditions outside.

12/17/2024

‼️ Here’s your reminder to check your tire pressure!

Cold temperatures cause air inside your tires to contract, leading to a drop in tire pressure; for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit decrease in temperature, your tire pressure can drop by 1-2 pounds per square inch (PSI), making it important to regularly monitor and adjust pressure during colder months to maintain optimal tire performance and safety.

As always, swing by Linder Tire for a quick inspection for peace of mind to keep you rolling this winter season.

We're starting the morning with an expanded Ice Storm Warning in east to southeast counties with completely covered (pink) roads. Most of the rest of the state has partially covered roads (blue). It's slick everywhere you turn!

Surface temperatures will be key to safe driving today. We'll warm above freezing from south to north today, changing the freezing rain to rain south of Highway 20 and a wintry mix with light snow accumulations likely until the system moves out of the area tonight. Check 511ia.org before you head out.
