Safe flying!

This weekend it's story time at the Airport! Meet author Jill Esbaum!
Jill will read aloud her new, nonfiction picture book "Jack Knight's Brave Flight: How One Gutsy Pilot Saved the U.S. Air Mail Service," which tells the suspenseful story of one night in 1921, when Jack Knight flew his biplane straight into a Midwest blizzard, exhausted, freezing, with a rapidly-diminishing fuel tank, struggling to reach the Iowa City airport safely and prove that air mail was worth the investment.
After hearing this astonishing tale, staff from Sidekick Coffee & Books will be on hand with copies of the book for purchase and signing if you wish. Tour the airport, look at the airport's training planes up close, and enjoy a plane-shaped cookie at the outdoor runway viewing area.
All ages are welcome. The Iowa City Municipal Airport is located at 1801 S. Riverside Dr., Iowa City. Storytime will take place from 10:30-11am in the 2nd floor conference room, followed by the book signing in the same location, with the opportunity to explore the airport, runway viewing area, and view planes until 12.

Who wants more landing distance? you're gonna get it!
This summer the Iowa City Municipal Airport will complete the long process of relocating the Runway 25 threshold to the east. That will change the landing distance available from the current 4196' to around 4870'
During this work there will be several days of daytime closures, full runway closures and even a total airport closure (for the intersection work) to the runway as contractors replace lights, redo markings, relocate PAPIs and also we complete some other pavement maintenance on the runway.
Keep an eye on NOTAMS for runway status. We'll be updating with more details as the schedules get closure. Project will begin June 15 and last until approximately August 12.
UI space science icon Don Gurnett dies at 81
With heavy hearts we share the news that long time aviator Don Gurnett has passed away. Don was as much a fixture of aviation in Iowa City as anyone. He had a glider and T-6 based at IOW for many many years.
He was given the Master Pilot Award by FAA in 2015.
UI space science icon Don Gurnett dies at 81 From a young age, inquiry drove Don Gurnett to discovery. He’s recounted for The Gazette memories walking the UI campus as a teenage freshman with his eyes heavenward in awe of Sputnik, the novel Russian satellite fueling the international space race.
Just had to be the bearer of bad news to a caller that was told their kitten they thought they were getting was stuck at the airport because it needed vaccines.
These types of scams are more and more common.
