08/11/2016

Lexi Speer, our final Purple Captain, is a senior from Vernon Hills, Illinois with a Major in Human Physiology Pre-Physician Assistant and a Minor in German. She is a captain of The Waluigis. Her favorite OnIowa memory was "last year as a returner leader when I brought my small group to Kickoff at Kinnick! They were filled with energy and started opening up to me on our walk there, asking me lots of questions. Then it was so great to see them in Kinnick surrounded by all their new Hawkeye friends. It was such a fun, positive atmosphere for everyone!" She says "My favorite thing about the University of Iowa is the number of ways you can get involved on this campus! There is truly something for everyone to join. Whether that be Greek Life, club sports, service and volunteer organizations, or student government, it is fun to find your passion and make new friends. The options are endless and everyone is so welcoming!" Lexi loves pasta with marinara sauce, can do the splits in any direction, wants to skydive, and loves watching TV. Her big advice to leaders is "to truly have fun and have a blast! Do not worry what anyone thinks of you because On Iowa is all about embracing who we are and the diversity and uniqueness we all bring to leadership. Make new friends everyday, whether that be with a leader you have not met yet or with a new student who may not have a buddy with them. The program will fly by and make every second count! Do not be scared to challenge yourself and expand your leadership horizon."

08/11/2016

Cam Phillips, our next Purple Captain, is a junior from Madison, Wisconsin with a major in Marketing, and a Minor in Sport and Recreation Management. He is a captain of the Purple Monkey Babies. His favorite OnIowa memory was "Kickoff at Kinnick last year. I just loved the chaos of everyone scattered all around and trying to organize everyone into the right formation." The top of Cam's bucket list is to be an OnIowa Captain, and his favorite food is the sugar cookies from All Team 2. He can also sing at a very high pitch, and is a huge fan of the Milwaukee Bucks. His big advice to his leaders is "As long as you are prepared and know what to do with your new students, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. The truth is some students don't want to be there and might visibly show it, but there will be plenty students are happy to be there. The only thing you can control is your energy and attitude which the new students will feed off of."

08/10/2016

Pat Lussenhop, our next Purple Captain, is a senior from Minneapolis, Minnesota with a major in Cinema and Writing and Entrepreneurial Management Certificates. He is a captain of The Waluigis. His favorite OnIowa memory was "On the first day of the On Iowa! Program, I almost immediately found others with the same obscure interests as me. I felt so welcome and at home, it instantly melted away any worries I had about coming to a new place where I knew no one." His favorite thing about Iowa is that "it is the perfect size! It is small enough to digest everything, but large enough that you don't feel trapped." His favorite food is baby back ribs, he has a really flexible tongue that he can touch his nose and chin with, and the top of his bucket list is to work on a movie set. His advice for leaders is to "Relax and be yourself. If you present yourself honestly, your first years will be more comfortable around you and be more willing to participate. Be prepared. Things probably won't go as you expect, have a backup plan for your backup plan."

08/10/2016

Haley Hollern, our first Purple Captain, is a senior from Champaign, Illinois with a major in Communication Studies, a Human Relations Minor, and a Leadership Studies Certificate. She is a captain of the Purple Monkey Babies. Her favorite OnIowa memory was “Last year's Kickoff at Kinnick. In my opinion, as a Captain (and leader), there isn't a more rewarding point of the program. Although your work has not quite begun, seeing all of the excitement and energy radiating through the incoming class and being reminded that just a short time ago you were in their exact shoes is a feeling unlike any other!” Her favorite food is “Pizza, pizza, and more pizza,” and the movie title for the story to her life is “Charmingly Clueless.” Her big advice for the leaders is "Don't be afraid to look silly. At the end of the day, if you're enjoying yourself and making the most of your experience, everything else will fall into place."

08/09/2016

Mitch Parker, our final Blue Captain, is a senior from Bettendorf, Iowa with a major in Finance and an Economics and German Minors. He is a captain of The Blue's Cruise. His favorite OnIowa memory was “Kickoff at Kinnick las year,” and his favorite thing about Iowa is “Kinnick Stadium.” The title of his movie would be “Talk to Me, Goose,” and he can raise one eyebrow at a time. The top of his bucket list is to “go to an Arsenal soccer game.” His big advice for the leaders is to “Don't be too nervous. Everything will work itself out, so don't panic if things don't go exactly as you expect. The more relaxed you appear, the more fun your group will have.”

08/09/2016

Emma Karns, our third Blue Captain, is a senior from Cedar Falls, Iowa with a major in Enterprise Leadership, a Rhetoric and Persuasion minor, a Leadership Studies certificate and a Non-profit management certificate. She is a captain of The Blue's Cruise. Her favorite OnIowa memory was “Seeing everyone so energetic at Kick Off at Kinnick! The top of her bucket list is to skydive, her favorite type of Pringles are original, and she can wiggle her ears! The movie named after her would be called “EK: the big and the bad,” and her advice for new leaders is “Everything will work out so be confident!”

08/08/2016

Claire Wilson, our next Blue Captain, is a junior West Chester, Iowa with a major in Social Work and Psychology double major and a Human Relations minor. She is a captain of the The Blue Tangs. Her favorite OnIowa memory was “Attempting to play Captain's Coming with 200 students during program last year without a megaphone,” and her favorite thing about Iowa is “The atmosphere - everyone is free to be who they really are.” Her favorite food is country friend steak, she can invert her thumb, and she is a “closet” fan of “High School Musical.” “Don't worry about trying to be perfect, you'll probably make a few mistakes! You have an amazing support system who will be with you every step of the way - make sure to utilize us!”

08/08/2016

Curtis Glennon, our first Blue Captain, is a senior from Arlington Heights, Illinois with a major in marketing. He is a captain of The Blue Tangs. His favorite OnIowa memory was “Kickoff at Kinnick,” and his favorite thing about Iowa is “The sense of community that comes with being a Hawkeye!” For the title of his movie “According to a Playbuzz survey titled "What Would Be The Title Of The Movie About Your Life?" my movie title would be Love Actually,” and that he “can spin a pen around my thumb.” His big advice for leaders is “Stay confident and don't worry if you mess up or forget to say something. The first-years do not know what the program is supposed to look like and they do not what you are supposed to say and when you are supposed to say it. So if you forget to say something, all you have to do is bring it up at a later time and everything will be alright!”

08/05/2016

Austin Martin, our final Orange Captain, is a senior from Troy, Ohio with a major in Enterprise Leadership and a minor in Human Relations. He is a captain of Orange is the New Black... & Gold. His favorite OnIowa memory was “Working Target Takeover my first year as a leader and seeing how many people came to the event and how much fun it all was.” His strangest talent is “In the movie Predator, the sound the Predator makes, I can do that,” and the top of his bucket list is “Taking a ride with the Blue Angels.” His advice for new leaders is that “Feeling nervous is completely normal, we have all been nervous when we first met our group of first-year students. Mistakes are going to happen and factors out of your control are going to happen, the best part of the program is that there is a large support staff that is with you every step of the way if you ever have any questions or need someone to talk to about something.”

08/03/2016

Jacinta Jargo, our next Orange Captain, is a senior from Clinton, Iowa with a major in Management & Organizations: Human Resource Management and Marketing; Leadership Studies Certificate. She is a captain of Orange is the New Black... & Gold. For her favorite OnIowa memory, she said that “Madness of Madison was amazing last fall. It is the event I am looking most forward to attending this August!” She says her favorite food is Welch's Mixed Fruit, Fruit Snacks followed closely by Kraft Original Macaroni and Cheese, and the movie title for the story of her life would be “Jacinta Meets World.” Her advice for leaders is to “Have confidence in yourself. You were all selected to be a leader because we as Captains, On Iowa! Professional Staff, and staff members of The University of Iowa noted your amazing potential and ability to welcome first-year and transfer students to The University of Iowa. You'll be awesome. :)

Our fourth & final Red Squad captain is Tommy! This Red Robins captain is an accounting major from Naperville, IL! Tommy is in his second year with the On Iowa! program!

Tommy's favorite On Iowa! memory is one for the books - "When I went through the program we all played hey me too in the tiny class room filled with chairs. I accidentally ran into another kid and we both fell down and started laughing. Best friends with them ever since."

Tommy's favorite thing about the University of Iowa is the people who are here! "I love the people, everyone is very nice and kind to each other. Everyone says hi to their friends and it overall is just a friendly atmosphere."

Tommy encourages new leaders to be themselves! He says to try their best to create a friendly environment for the new students, and to give them a good first impression of The University of Iowa!

His favorite food is pizza and has the strange talent of winking both of his eyes separately. The top of his bucket list is to become a certified sky diver & scuba diver in Australia. He is a closet fan of Lord of the Rings.

We are so grateful for our terrific Tommy!
