Narciso, originally from Hidalgo, Mexico, has been living and working in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City for the past few years. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa and specializes in creating stunning low and high-relief style sculptures using polymer clay.
His work is deeply influenced by traditional Indigenous ritual practices, focusing on themes of world renewal and the universal networks of relations, particularly through the spirituality of Flower Worlds. These practices, often referred to as Costumbres or the “Old Ways,” have been a part of Mesoamerican and American Southwest cultures from ancient times to the present day.
Don’t miss “Dreams and Reflections of Flower Worlds,” where Narciso will share his creative process, personal experiences, and extensive research on Flower Worlds as expressed through traditional spiritual practices in Mesoamerica.

++ Welcome to Sewa Ania! ++
On Saturday, we sought our ancestors’ blessing to enter the Flower World, and the ceremony was both beautiful and powerful. The air was enchanted with the sweet aroma of copal and sage, weaving a fragrant tapestry around us. The drumbeat resonated like the heart’s own rhythm, while the concha’s call gracefully stirred the four directions from their slumber.
When you find yourself in Iowa City, I warmly invite you to visit The House of DOTŁ’IZHI, where you can immerse yourself in the magic of the Flower World and discover its treasures.

The deer dance of the Yaqui, (Yoeme) and Mayo people of Sonora is sacred .The deer represents good and tells the story of the deer, his brother and the flower world. It is said to have been held before a deer hunt, thanking the deer for his sacrifice so that the people may live.
Deer dancers, pahkolam, “old men of the fiesta” wear rattles around their ankles made from butterfly cocoons, honoring the insect world, and rattles from the hooves of deer around their waist, honoring the many deer who have died.

This piece holds immense personal significance for me because both my brother and sister-in-law were victims of the MMIR crisis. While we may never attain justice for them , our focus remains on honoring their memory, fostering healing and awareness.

++The Healing Circle ++
Every aspect of this design carries a narrative. It speaks of the unspoken tales of our lost sisters and brothers, of our children torn away under the guise of faith.
The circle symbolizes the Medicine Wheel,
Its four circles echo the Four Directions,
The entwined circles mirror the essence of Sweetgrass,
Red signifies the blood shed in sorrow,
Orange represents the innocence of the children.
This narrative beckons us, as a community, to unite in healing across all four directions. The moment is upon us to halt this crisis and embark on a journey of true healing. These earrings were created to be featured in a music video shot in Paris, France, further amplifying their message of healing and unity across borders.

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) crisis demands immediate attention. It’s a heartbreaking reality rooted in historical trauma and ongoing injustices. Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit individuals face disproportionate risks due to systemic vulnerabilities.
Their stories are not just statistics; they represent profound losses and the urgent need for justice and systemic change. We must amplify their voices, demand accountability, and work together for a better future.

“The Future is Indigenous” is a project initiated by Alicia Velasquez, the owner and artist of The House of Dotlizhi. The idea took root from a conversation with two young Native artists who expressed feeling unseen in the art world. They struggled with the label of “Native artist” because their work didn’t fit the stereotypical Western image of Native American art—you know like cowboys and Indians. Alicia saw an opportunity to empower Native American students to embrace their talents fully.
“The Future is Indigenous” is more than just a program; it’s a movement that encourages the integration of traditional Native American art with STEM. It aims to bridge the gap between cultural heritage and modern innovation, fostering a space where creativity flourishes without boundaries.

Let’s talk about the beauty and significance of Native American jewelry!
Authentic Native American jewelry is handcrafted by skilled artisans, often using traditional techniques passed down through generations. Each piece carries cultural and spiritual meanings, reflecting the rich heritage of indigenous communities.
On the other hand, mass-produced Native American jewelry is often made without the same level of craftsmanship or cultural understanding. These pieces may lack the authenticity and soul that come with handcrafted artistry.
When you choose authentic Native American jewelry, you not only adorn yourself with stunning art but also support indigenous artists and preserve their cultural heritage.
Let’s celebrate and honor the true spirit of Native American craftsmanship!
++Pinnacle Pursuit Ring++
