Us at the Johnson County Affordable Housing Coalition have teamed up with the Johnson County Local Homeless Coordinating Board to bring awareness and attention during National Week of Action for persons experiencing homelessness. Starting this week, the United States Supreme Court will hear the Johnson v. Grants Pass case. This is the most significant Supreme Court case about homelessness criminalization and the rights of homeless people in decades. At its core, this case will decide whether cities can punish people for things like sleeping outside with a pillow or blanket, even when there are no safe shelter options. The case highlights the issue of unaffordable housing and its consequences, including increased homelessness and encampments in residential areas. Learn more about the case & how to get involved:

Thank you to our friends and partners for recognizing Shelter House as United Way's 2023 Game Changer in Financial Security. Through prevention, outreach, shelter, housing, and supportive services, everything we do at Shelter House helps individuals and families in crisis in our community to get their feet back under them, build financial security, and move away from the crisis of homelessness. And the low-barrier approach we take to every aspect of our work ensures folks don't have to jump through unnecessary hoops to access services.

Meeting people where they are, providing life-saving services without judgment, and supporting folks as they stabilize is what we do here at Shelter House. We are so grateful for the recognition.

Save the date! Iowa Wrestling's Take Down Homelessness auction is back for a second year, but this time with 3x the wrestlers participating.

Thank you ever-so-much to our incredible list of sponsors for the 2024 Shelter House Book Sale.

Your sponsorships help us to quite literally keep the lights on. All sponsorships from this weekend's events directly fund our operational costs and help Shelter House continue to be a resource for people in the community.

So thank you. Every sponsorship sent and every book purchased helps us provide critical services that offer safety and security to our most vulnerable neighbors.

There's no other way to say this, because what we are feeling right now is pure gratitude. So, we won't be fancy or eloquent, we will just say a big, giant THANK YOU.

To our community members who donated a stellar selection of books, to the shoppers who bought thousands of books, to the volunteers who sorted and sorted (and sorted and sorted and).

To our sponsors who sent checks. To the churches that baked and provided so many tables. To the businesses that donated coffee and lent furnishings and brought team members to support our cause. To the committees who planned and showed up again and again (and again and again and). To Shelter House program staff who gave away their weekends to support the organization. To our Board of Directors who supported with their ideas, time, donations, purchases, and with so much labor.

To everyone.
To you.
Thank you.

The pieces Mark Gromko contributed were taken in the Yukon Territory from the safety of his car. The bear was digging for grubs near the side of a road and paid no attention beyond a momentary gaze, at times coming close enough that he rolled up his windows for fear she would be more curious than he was.

Visit to view more information about each piece and to place your bids.

The driving force behind Mark Gromko's photography is the desire to create images that convey the beauty of the natural world. By employing unusual perspective, simple compositions, and careful use of light and contrast, Mark strives to make photos that are both realistic and creative.
