WASH YOUR HANDS!

Until we have a better idea of how the situation in the corridor is developing, CCAN will not be encouraging large public gatherings. Many organizations and community hubs are taking it upon themselves to cancel such events. As for those that are not canceled, we will be using discretion in choosing what we do and do not post. Our monthly meetings and preparations for our next convention are on hold until further notice.
Hopefully, the virus will be well contained and we can go back to being a fun, vibrant community soon. In the meanwhile, we need to focus on bringing that community together in different ways. Now is the time to be preparing for the potential of lengthy illnesses and quarantines, increased food security issues, supply issues, and medical system overload. We will continue to post daily action posts and local updates but our primary focus will be more on what we can do to contribute to community preparations for what could come.
We had so much fun at our last Loteria night! Thank you to all of our speakers of the night. Candidates and campaigns alike had a chance to connect directly with community members to share their platforms and plans for the future! Our Hand-Cranked Immigration System

In recent decades, hundreds of thousands of congressionally allotted green cards have gone unused because of bureaucracy. At the same time, the backlog of green card applicants has grown to more than 5 million. Per-country caps create decades-long waits for immigrants from countries like India and China.

President Biden’s latest reconciliation proposal would help the latter by helping the former: It would "recapture" those unused green cards, making them available for immigrants who are currently caught up in the backlog.

Members of both parties have supported green card recapture — recapturing green cards is good for our economy and our national security.

Room to Grow: Setting Immigration Levels in a Changing America 09/01/2021

Room to Grow: Setting Immigration Levels in a Changing America

Our country will need more immigrants in order to combat the worst effects of demographic decline — especially during and after the pandemic — to protect the nation’s social and economic health.

New projections indicate that Social Security costs are expected to exceed the total income in 2021 amid COVID-19's ongoing financial toll, reports Kate Davidson of The Wall Street Journal. "...Trustees now project elevated mortality rates related to the pandemic through 2023, and expect lower immigration and child-bearing this year and next, compared with their 2020 estimates," adds Davidson.

This issue is touched on in the Room to Grow paper:

Room to Grow: Setting Immigration Levels in a Changing America By Ali Noorani and Danilo Zak Immigrants — working together with U.S.-born Americans — have long been essential in helping to build a more prosperous country that can live up to the ethos of the American dream. Now, immigrants have another increasingly important role to play, this time in respon...

Labor shortfall will become a labor crisis unless Biden acts on immigration

"America’s goal should be to have the most competitive immigration policy in the world, yet the United States ranks in the bottom third of wealthy nations in terms of its foreign-born share of the population.
