Pet New Year's Resolutions 🕰 🎉

Petland Iowa City thinks some of the best New Year's Resolutions can include your furry friend.

Ever say to yourself that you want to be more active, exercise more often? If you're a dog owner, try taking your pup for walks, jogs, or other outdoor active activities. This can make it more fun and benefit both pet and owner.

Want to groom your pet more often this new year? This is a great resolution. One thing you can do to help your companion be more comfortable at the grooming salon is to pet them more often, get them used to more touching of the paws, etc.

Want to wash your dog more frequently? The shampoos and conditioners out there are fantastic. Your pup will not only smell good but truly look better as well!

How about finally getting around to microchipping your dog? If you've been putting this off, please prioritize this. We all love our pets, and that microchip can match your pet to the owner by being in the national database if ever lost.

Need to still spay or neuter your dog? This is another great one to add to the list. Check with your local veterinarian for more information.

Petland Iowa City Discusses Pet-Friendly Legislation

Petland Iowa City has always been involved in pet-friendly politics whether that be local, state, or in Washington DC. We had the interesting opportunity to advocate for (4) main legislation. Read on and watch this segment to learn more!

Pet-Friendly Legislation:

* Pet Importation - That's right, as many as 1 - 3 million dogs/puppies are being imported across our borders. The dogs/puppies being imported aren't properly vaccinated or vet checked.

* Zoonotic Diseases - How are we prepared for the pandemic on the pet side of things?

* Shipping: Food & Supplies - Dog food shortages are a real thing and shipping hurdles exist. We want to make sure the government is aware of this as pet food is vital to our pets.

* Education - This is for children across the country and could take place In the classroom.

🐶 Choosing The Dog Breed Right For You

Petland Iowa City offers three things you'll want to know and consider before you buy a new puppy. Our store offers many different breeds & will help match you with the right breed for your personality & lifestyle.

1. Large breed or small breed?

2. High maintenance or low maintenance puppies?

3. Non-shedding vs shedding?

❓ Do Tiny Dogs need Big Care?

Small dog breeds are wonderful and super cute animals. Taking care of small dogs can be tough at times because they are so little. You must have a special amount of patience for these dogs. Before buying one, you may wonder how much care will they require? Read on to the basics of caring for small dogs.

1. Balanced exercise

Small size dogs have shorter legs, which means they can’t handle very far walks. It is important that you respect their size and do not drag them on long hikes that their bodies are not made. The smallest dog needs to walk around the block to get in a little exercise and handle their business.

2. Extra vigilance

This is beyond important when having small dogs. Dogs are curious animals, especially small dogs. They love exploring things on the ground by putting them in their mouths. To ensure their safety so that they do not choke on anything, remove all of the small choking hazardous you have in your house to higher up surfaces.

3. Feed them the proper amount.

Most small dogs will eat whatever you put in front of them. This is a great thing and something that should be taken with precaution. Because these dogs will eat anything sometimes they do not know when to stop. Make sure that your dog is being fed the right caloric amount every day – not too much or too little. You want your small dog to have a healthy weight to ensure that they have a happy healthy life.

If you are thinking about or already own a small dog this summer, please make sure to take these tips seriously. We want you and your dog to have a happy and healthy life together. Small dog breeds are special animals that should always be handled with care.

❓ Preparing For Large Dog Breeds

Do you live by the motto “bigger is better” and have you chosen to purchase and add a pup to your home?

If so, then you’d probably fair well with large dog breeds! They’re tons of fun and we have them in our store. With big dogs, comes big responsibility, beginning with the preparation of your home. Here are a few tips to assist you.

Get a House or Larger Space

Many large dog breeds need space to stretch, run, and play! There are, however, plenty that look active and are big old couch potatoes. If you’ve done your large dog breeds research and the one you’ve selected needs plenty of exercise and space, then consider upgrading your living area.

Big and boisterous barking and loud playful footsteps could be bothersome to close neighbors and eventually become a nuisance. When deciding to purchase a particularly active large dog breed, it’s ideal to have a larger space with a yard so that your dog can play without disturbing neighbors.

Okay, so what if moving into a house isn’t an option? Be sure that if you’re currently living in an apartment, there aren’t any breed or weight restrictions in your apartment community. Contact your leasing office for information on local dog parks or enclosed areas where your pup can run and roam.

Prepare Your Yard

If you already live in a house with a sizable yard to accommodate large dog breeds, get it ready for your new pup. Create or schedule regular lawn maintenance by treating it for mosquitos and other pests that could potentially bite, infect, and harm your doggie.

Purchase safe and weather durable toys for your dog to play with while he’s outside. Depending on your space, install some training plastic tubes in the ground, for them to run through and weave between! Petland carries a wide variety of durable toys that can’t be easily destroyed by the strong jaws of large dog breeds. From tug-o-war ropes, to indestructible ball toys, we have the selection you need to keep them entertained and happy.

Keep Them Fenced

Let’s face it – large dog breeds can easily damage a fence and create a path to explore a neighboring yard, if they aren’t monitored. You want to make sure that before bringing your new puppy into your home, that you’ve checked and double-checked all of the entrances and the surrounding foundation. You don’t want any holes that they can use to create an escape route! You want to prevent them getting out and lost or having a dangerous encounter with another dog.

Top Puppy Training Tip: Who's In Charge❓

Top Puppy Training Tip #1: Establishing who is in charge of the household.

The way to do this, similar to how the mother does this with the puppy in the litter, is to roll the puppy over. You'll notice that the hands hold the puppy securely under their armpits. You'll want to keep your puppy in this position until they relax and stop fighting that position. It's important to ignore the behavior if your puppy is fighting the position. Once your puppy relaxes, the legs relax, you can turn them back over. You'll want to do this daily and can even do it in the cradle position as you would an infant. Watch this segment for a demonstration.

Additional Info Regarding Pets & COVID-19:

The CDC has issued some guidelines to follow as pets can contract COVID-19. However, if your pet has COVID-19, it's not a threat to the owners as they are not passing it along to other people. What is happening, is that we are getting COVID and giving it to our pets. Follow these two main guidelines listed below:

1. Distance our pets from other pets outside the home.
2. If someone in the house contracts COVID-19, distance that individual from your pet.

Four Grades Of Dog Food 🍗

Most pet parents want to know the difference between dog foods. Is it worth the extra expense for better foods? What is the difference in levels of dog foods? Petland Iowa City is here to help you understand the distinguishing differences between dog food grades. Watch for more info and stop by Petland Iowa City today for all your pet's needs!

Four Grades of Dog Foods:

1. Generic: More Fillers

* Bought on price/value. These are typically found in the grocery store and are filled with corns and grains. Dogs actually need to eat more of this and you'll end up cleaning up after your pet more.

2. Medium: Less Filler, More Meat

* You're getting away from corn and grains and more into the meats. Your dog will eat less and less clean up after your furry friend is required.

3. Premium: More Ingredients = More Nutritious

* More nutritious and lots of meat sources. It's more expensive, but less is needed to feed and fill your pet.

4. Specialty: Premium Dog Food Topped With Freezer Products

* This is really top of the line. You're combining Premium level foods with additional freeze-dried foods to round out their diet.
