The Sport and Rec Mgmt program kicks off every semester with an "All-Majors Meeting" that invites majors/minors in the program and any interested students to come together for announcements of upcoming field trips, scholarships, experiential learning opportunities and more, and to meet faculty and their peers. Last week, the SRM program gathered for its spring All-Majors Meeting, which you can view at this link: https://bit.ly/Spring2022AMM
to get all the important info if you were unable to attend.
Thank you for being UISRM!

Check out the 2021 DEI Annual Report for the University of Iowa College of Liberal Arts & Sciences-- It breaks down demographics among faculty, staff, and student groups, and outlines strategic steps CLAS is taking to build diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the college.

We are especially happy to see our Social Work student Dayanna Martinez-soto on the cover (make sure you read her eye-opening interview with the Dean!) and recognition of Social Work faculty member Yolanda Spears for her Diversity Catalyst Award in 2021. https://clas.uiowa.edu/2021-dei-annual-report

During the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights Week Celebration, we come together through service projects to serve our community in meaningful and tangible ways alongside local non-profits. Join UI Unity Week and honor MLK Jr. by contributing to one of those service projects: the food and basic needs drive. A donation container is conveniently located in our academic building outside room E105 Field House - drop off items before class or on your way to work out.
You can learn more about all the community-based service projects, including the donation items lists and emergency care kit project, at this website: https://mlk.uiowa.edu/community-based-service-projects

Did you know our Sport and Rec Mgmt program's online bachelor's degree has been top-ranked by multiple outlets? AcademicInfluence.com recently ranked UISRM #1 in online Sport Mgmt bachelor's degrees: https://academicinfluence.com/rankings/online-degree/bachelors/sport-management
And BestColleges.com ranked UISRM a top-10 online Sport Mgmt bachelor's degree in 2019! You can read more about our online program and the stories of some of our online students at this link: https://clas.uiowa.edu/hhp/news-and-events/sport-and-recreation-management-june-2019-newsletter
In addition to serving fully-online students, the SRM program's online courses serve hundreds of on-campus students as they squeeze full class loads, experiential learning, jobs, off-campus internships and, in some cases, Iowa Athletics into their busy schedules and 4-year graduation plans. Online learning supports the success of nearly every one of our 700+ majors/minors and grad students!

Congratulations to Rachel Henton, 2013 Sport and Rec Mgmt alumna, who served on the Indianapolis Host Committee for this week's College Football Playoff National Championship game! Rachel, a founding member of the UISRM Advisory Board, is an Event Management Associate at Maribeth Smith & Associates, an event management agency in Indianapolis. Rachel shared her experience with us in photos and said, "This past weekend, Indianapolis hosted the 2022 CFP National Championship as the first cold-weather city to do so. I had the pleasure of serving on the Indianapolis Host Committee alongside my industry peers and assisted in the planning of the Welcome Party, welcoming the 56 National Teachers of the Year to Indianapolis along with CFP Foundation partners and executives. I also was given the opportunity to be on the pre-game pageantry crew and hold the American Flag on the field during the National Anthem. Lastly, the company I work for, Maribeth Smith & Associates, was hired to plan and execute the University of Georgia's Pre-Game Tailgate Party hosted by their University President. It was an experience I'll never forget and just one of the many examples of how important it is to maintain your network throughout your career and stay involved."
Great advice, Rachel! We're proud of all you're accomplishing and thankful for you sharing this once-in-a-lifetime sport and entertainment experience with us!

The Sport and Rec Mgmt program mourns the passing of Dr. Christine Grant, a pioneering leader in intercollegiate athletics who was instrumental in opening doors of opportunity to women and girls in sport, recreation and education. Her influence extended far beyond her many roles on the UI campus, where she built the Iowa Hawkeyes into a women's athletics power and mentored generations of future athletics administrators. When attempting to find the words to pay appropriate respect to Dr. Grant, we look to Iowa Field Hockey Head Coach Lisa Cellucci who stated, "Personally, as I reflect on my own thirty-year career as a female athlete and coach, I know that at every step her impact on me was transformational. I am not alone. It is one thing to believe in something, it's quite another to unquestionably dedicate one's career and very life to that belief...We will strive to live up to her example of excellence and especially to champion equal opportunities for girls and women in both sport and life. You have meant the world to all of us, rest in peace, Dr. Grant."
You can learn more about Dr. Grant's prolific career at the Gazette article linked here.

• “Having only one parent present within my life, I am left paying for my college debt on my own. Not having to pay for this summer’s class allows me to have the ability to take time off from my part-time job so that I can focus on my internship and learn as much as possible. Summer courses are not covered by financial aid, therefore I would have to pay for them out of pocket if not for this gracious gift.”

• “With the assistance of this award, I will be able to better pursue my goal of joining the Sport and Recreation Management M.A. program at the University of Iowa starting in the Fall of 2021.”

• “This scholarship is helping me take part in an experiential learning experience with the Iowa Athletic Department. This position was supposed to be my on-campus job, but with the financial strain placed on the athletic department from COVID, I was unable to start the position. The scholarship allows me to work this role and gain valuable experience relevant to my future career goals, while still helping me cover my school expenses.”

• “This scholarship means so much to me because without it I wouldn’t have been able to take part in this amazing experience. Unfortunately, due to pandemic restrictions, I was unable to obtain a job this past summer or during the year thus limiting my ability to help fund college expenses. Receiving this scholarship helped me fund this practicum and allow me to reduce the amount of loans needed for my final year of college. I hope to set myself up in the best way possible for success in my new career and participating in this practicum and being in the SRM program have done just that. It is unbelievable to me how much I have grown in the past two years since I transferred to Iowa, and the SRM program is one of the main reasons why. I have gained hands on experience within this program through the many practicums I have participated in.”

Above are gratitude statements from just a few of the Sport and Rec Mgmt program's scholarship recipients during the past academic year. Your support truly makes an impact on the lives of our students. If you want to help make a practicum, field trip or internship possible for an SRM student in 2022 by supporting our expansion of financial aid, please go to this link ==>> https://give.communityfunded.com/o/u-of-iowa/i/iowa-champions/s/sports-and-rec-management-giving-tuesday before our Season of Giving campaign concludes. Our faculty and Advisory Board members are currently doubling your gifts to make them go farther! Any amount will make a big difference. THANK YOU for being UISRM, and happiest of new years to all!!
