SAVE THE DATE and time- APRIL 15 at 6 pm for the annual Spring Potluck- with Dean Washburn and our fantastic Iowa Law Women Faculty members. 😊

There is a lot that is happening at OWLSS and so, Brooke and I have not clogged your inboxes with the invitations. This is just a heads-up. A formal invite will follow soon.
Dear OWLSS members!
Hey All,

A good friend sent me this list of recommended books from the GirlBoss website. There are books in the list that talk about careers and life in general rather than just money advice. (Yes, I know it says this exact description in the title.) Anyway, school is crazy with enough reading as it is, but they might serve as a nice break from Cardozo and Andrews. The only one I would add to the list, which many of you already know, is Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg.
When I first began to do trial work in the Iowa District Court for Linn County in 1980, some Judges insisted on calling me Mrs. Aasgaard. When I nicely explained that I kept my maiden name when I married and that my husband (of 41 years now) was James E. Kleeman, they said that was not pertinent. They never called the male attorneys Mr. Pruss, Mr. Jackson or Mr. anything. They called them, "Counsel for the Plaintiff/Petitioner" or "Counsel for the Defendant/Respondent." The same Judges said I could not appear before them in a suit with slacks. Can you imagine??? I was there when OWLSS started in the little room where we met and had lunch. We welcomed men in if they wanted to, but hardly any of them were interested. I was also a framer of the Constitution for the Iowa Organization of Women Attorneys. Some argued against such an organization and tried to get the vote to fail. I am proud of the caliber of female attorneys we have now and the enlightened Judges we have. I don't know about other states, but my 6th Judicial District in Iowa is packed with excellent Judges.

The mission of OWLSS is to study the changing needs and problems of women in the legal profession, and develop, recommend and implement new programs with particular emphasis upon the needs of women at the University of Iowa College of Law.

We are starting off this week with another wonderful OWLSS member spotlight!

Our next OWLSS member spotlight is Amber Crow. Amber is a 1L from Truro, Iowa. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in Journalism, BA in Ethics and Public Policy, and minor in Criminology. Amber is involved in First-Generation Professionals and OWLSS.

She is interested in the areas of Family Law, Juvenile Defense, Criminal Defense, and Litigation. Amber loves connecting with her OWLSS mentor. It has helped her tremendously to cultivate a better sense of belonging while fighting imposter syndrome during her first semester. Her future plans include finding a summer position in the Des Moines area.

"I'm really proud to have been admitted to Iowa Law. Imposter syndrome has been challenging for me to navigate and sometimes I find I'm doubting myself more than I should. I'm really proud of the confidence I've been growing and nurturing within myself. I'm really proud I finished the semester during a global pandemic with grades I'm really proud of! I'm excited to see what my next few years hold."

We love having Amber as an OWLSS member, and we look forward to supporting her professional and educational goals throughout her law school career!

"Something I have achieved in law school that I'm proud of is making it through the fall semester, even while remote, and still feeling like I was able to meet other 1L students and enjoy all of my classes."

We are so happy that Chloe is a member of the OWLSS community, and we look forward to supporting her as she achieves her goals for the next three years at Iowa Law!
