Hello Friends,

The “No War on Yemen” caravan scheduled for tomorrow (Monday, January 25th at 12 noon) has been canceled due to expected inclement weather.

Fortunately, there are other ways you can advocate for peace and the end of the war on Yemen. Please take the scheduled time tomorrow to visit whitehouse.gov, scroll down to “contacts”, and send the Biden Administration a message urging the end to US military involvement in Yemen, an end to arms shipments to Saudi Arabia, an increase in humanitarian aid, and a speedy end to sanctions.

Also, you can join CodePink’s “World Says No to War on Yemen” global online rally at 1 pm central time. Follow this link to get the Zoom information.

Stay safe and be well!
Hello friends,

Veterans For Peace Chapter #161 and PEACE Iowa will be holding a “No War on Yemen” caravan, beginning at 12 noon on January 25th at Mercer Park in Iowa City.

The caravan will be one of many similar events happening that day across the country. In November, the UN director of the World Food Program declared Yemen the worst humanitarian disaster in the world. Starvation has already claimed tens of thousands, and another 10 million are close to starving. The US continues to provide military support to Saudi Arabia, as it has since 2014, has cut food aid, and has declared increased sanctions. The January 25th caravan will call for an end to US military involvement, an end to arms shipments to Saudi Arabia, an increase in humanitarian aid, and a speedy end to sanctions.

The caravan will leave Mercer Park, 2701 Bradford Dr in Iowa City at 12 noon and follow the route on the map below. The whole event should last about an hour. Signs and materials will be available but feel encouraged to bring your own. Please arrive early to make sure your vehicle is decorated to your liking so the caravan can leave by 12 noon.

All participants are encouraged to practice safe physical distancing and wear face masks if possible.
Join Veterans for Peace in honoring our veterans and celebrating peace at 10:45 am on 11/11/20 in the Iowa City Ped Mall or via Zoom. Bell ringing at 11 am followed by comments from
special guest, author David Swanson. Learn more and register for the Zoom link at: https://lu.ma/ArmisticeDayinIowaCity

"We are in the midst of a pandemic caused by a respiratory virus. Now is not the time to roll back air protection requirements or to choose not to bolster existing regulations." - Physicians for Social Responsibility - Iowa Chapter and Environment Iowa #docsforclimate #ActOnClimate #ClimateChangesHealth
It's the EPA's job to protect our air, water, environment, and health, during COVID and always. But recently, they've been letting polluters go unchecked. That's why "we need our members of Congress to use their power to stand up to the Trump administration and call on the EPA to do its job, protecting our air and water." True in Iowa, and true in PA.

"We can be a community. Now more than ever." - powerful op-ed on responding to the coronavirus outbreak by PSR board president-elect Dr. David Drake. Physicians for Social Responsibility - Iowa Chapter
*The CDC chief has just committed to free COVID-19 testing for all in America regardless of insurance status.* It's unclear if and how this extends to other testing, doctor's visits, and treatment
https://www.cnn.com/videos/politics/2020/03/12/katie-porter-robert-redfield-cdc-coronavirus-free-testing-sot-vpx.cnn?fbclid=IwAR37bN9Bll7n1sv-Y-o8TK6ydZ5GVbJcn83vhd8SX2maDO5mvFOpqvwsv0M

The CDC's commitment to paying for at least COVID-19 testing in the goal of identifying COVID-19 cases and decreasing further spread of the pandemic is completely undermined by the lack of testing kit availability and clarity of their commitment.

Patients concerned that they have COVID-19 instead of just getting the coronavirus test have to have workups (CBC, CMP, Flu A, Flu B, etc.) to rule out alternative causes, to ensure that the scarcely available kits are used on those who are most likely to have the disease.

Issues with this:
A) Unless the CDC makes it clear that their commitment was also to pay for the doctor's visits this requires, the alternative testing, and treatment if needed, people are not going to come in to get tested because of yet again, the fear of crippling medical debt. This will lead to further increased spread of the illness and a more likely overwhelming of the healthcare system.

B) It doesn't make any logical sense from finances to resources, to complete all of these ruling out tests instead of just one, especially in light of the fact that it is easily possible to have COVID-19 in addition to something like the flu. And so testing by ruling out is only likely to miss people who may then, in the perception that they are safe to interact with, go out and infect others.

To demand COVID-19 testing kit production and distribution becomes an immediate priority at the CDC, you can sign the petition below:

https://www.change.org/p/we-demand-all-us-states-are-immediately-provided-functional-coronavirus-testing-kits

Once testing kits are more available, things like drive through testing which can evaluate many more people as well as protect healthcare workers and hospital patients can become widespread common practices that can effectively reduce the pandemic and slow further spread. Ramping up COVID-19 test production and distribution is clearly one of the fundamental first steps that must be taken before other measures can be effectively implemented to protect the US population.

August 7th-8th: Film streaming of "The Vow from Hiroshima."

August 9th at 9 AM (CST): Student-led discussion with Setsuko Thurlow and the filmmakers.

Free registration: https://bit.ly/3i6eugV

"The Vow from Hiroshima" is an intimate portrait of Setsuko Thurlow, a passionate survivor of the atomic bombing, and tireless activist for nuclear weapons abolition. Her moving story is told through the lens of her growing friendship with a second generation survivor, Mitchie Takeuchi.

As a 13 year old child, Setsuko miraculously survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, an experience that shaped her life forever as a tireless activist for nuclear abolition. The film is a timely exploration of the global dangers of nuclear weapons and provides an insider’s perspective as we see Setsuko work with the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).
The culmination of Setsuko’s decades of activism is her acceptance speech at the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony in Oslo, and the entry into force of the international Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons #TPNW earlier this year.

With introductory remarks from the filmmakers Mitchie Takeuchi and Susan Strickler, followed by comments from Hiroshima survivor Setsuko Thurlow in a conversation with IPPNW international medical students movement from Kenya, India, Russia, United States and Germany.

PSR-Iowa members Angela De Prairie and Ben King attended the F-35 fighter jet protest in Madison, Wisconsin last weekend.
"The enormous funds spent on the F35 fighter jet program could have been used to prepare for the epidemic and save lives, rather
than wage war with a first strike, nuclear-equipped offensive weapon like the F-35...We urgently need investment in health care, the environment, education and other sectors that help us thrive. In order to do this, our leaders need to start investing money where it matters—not in weapons of war but in programs that build truly resilient communities."
