The Cambridge Police Cadet Program is designed for Cambridge residents between the ages of 18-23 who are interested in learning more about or want to pursue a career in policing. The program offers a competitive hourly wage ($18.45), strong benefits and vacation time. It requires a two-year commitment.
If you or someone you know is interested in joining the next Cadet class, the Cadet exam will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2021. The deadline to apply for the Cadet exam is Wednesday, June 30, 2021. Interested candidates can download the application and learn more about the program at http://camb.ma/policecadet. The program is scheduled to begin in November 2021.
Cambridge Police Cadets will be provided with extensive classroom training and cooperative education in addition to specific on-the-job training opportunities. Police Cadets will become familiar with the daily operations and functions of the department and culture of its community policing-related work through temporary assignments throughout various sections of the department, including the Commissioner’s Office, Patrol Operations, Support Services, and specialized units. As part of the Department, Police Cadets will also participate in community policing activities and engage with residents, businesses and visitors of the City of Cambridge.
Primary responsibilities will include:
• Classroom training that introduces topics such as 21st Century Policing, Law Enforcement and the Cambridge Police Department, Procedural and Social Justice, Basic First Aid, Self-Defense, Criminal and Juvenile Law, Crime Analysis, and simulated trainings.
• Field assignments such as assisting the Traffic Unit with special events, community outreach, criminal investigations, crime scene services, and court prosecution.
• Administrative duties, including preparing reports, maintaining records, updating data, researching projects and more.
• Fitness and health training
The Cambridge Police Cadet Program was relaunched in 2019 after a more than 30-year hiatus. Six Cadets joined the Department. One Cadet – Autumn Harrison – became the first Cadet from the new Cadet Program to graduate from the Cambridge-Northeastern Police Academy and join the Cambridge Police Department as a patrol officer in 2020. Carlos Aquino-Navarro is currently in the Cambridge-Northeastern Police Academy, while the four remaining Cadets have all registered to take the 2021 Municipal Police Officer Exam.
To be eligible for the Cadet Program, which requires a two-year commitment, candidates must be current Cambridge residents between the ages of 18-23 at the time of the June 30, 2021 application, have lived in the city for the last three years, have a high school diploma or a GED certificate at the time of the exam, be a citizen of the United States, have a valid Massachusetts’ Driver’s License and a good driving record, and take and pass the July 31 exam. Officer McLeod recently came to the Cambridge Police Department after graduating from Southern Connecticut State University on a full athletic scholarship, where he played basketball and joined the 1000-point club. He gave up an opportunity to play professionally overseas to become a Cambridge Police Officer.
What made you decide to become a Cambridge Police Officer?
I decided to become a Cambridge Police Officer because I grew up in the City of Cambridge (Official) and I was involved in all the police-run programs such as Cambridge Pride, Night Court, and the Cambridge Youth Police Academy. I could see the positive impact that police in Cambridge have on the youth, and I wanted to be a part of that and give back to the community that raised me.
Describe your connection to the community.
I have lived in Cambridge my whole life. I lived in the Port, Coast, and North Cambridge. I went to elementary school at Morse Elementary School. I went to Cambridge Public School District (Official Site) and played varsity basketball for the CRLS Athletics for 3 years, where I scored 1000 points. I worked for the MYEP - Mayor's Youth Empowerment Program growing up and I also worked for Cambridge Recreation, where I did a bunch of different jobs.
What are some of your favorite spots in Cambridge?
One of my favorite places in Cambridge to eat is S&S Restaurant Deli or Sarah's Market and Cafe'. My favorite basketball court in Cambridge is Hoyt Field. That is a legendary basketball court.

Services are offered in community based homes and are offered on a 24 hour basis. Adult Day Program:
This program is designed to interweave personal, social and community activities, according to the goals and desires of each individual. The intent of these services is to provide a safe, caring and stimulating atmosphere to encourage persons with disabilities to participate in activities that contribute to the person's independence and quality of life to a person 16 years of age or older
