I heard that PS1 has Black Lives Matter signs. Is that true? Any other justice signs? How do I get one and how much? I don't need yard stakes.
Greetings! I am new to the area, and thought this would be a great place to start...

Calling all artists!

The UISG Art Project is now accepting applications for the 2017-2018 cycle. This year, artists will have the opportunity to create art that celebrates a resource and community that make Iowa City unique. The canvas sized artwork will be displayed in the Kendall Gallery at the Iowa Memorial Union and later permanently placed in the representing location of the artist choice. UISG is encouraging artists to promote the resources and communities available for students on campus. This funded art project will select six artists for this year’s cycle.

You can apply here: https://uisg.uiowa.edu/justice-equity/art-at-the-imu/

Ashlee Mays // We Know Who You Are, By What You Say — Public Space One

Tomorrow night at 6pm join visiting artist Ashlee Mays for a bird listening activity at PS1!
RSVP here: http://www.publicspaceone.com/events/amays

Humans have a tendency to repeat information that they hear, like birds, we learn songs and stories from those we hold close, and we sing those tunes and share those words, over and over again.

90% of bird watching can be done through auditory experiences, as in, it is often easier to hear the birds around us than it is to see them. The trick is being able to identify who a bird is by what they are saying. If we take some time to learn the songs of the birds around us, our world will get bigger. Listening is an active state, and when we listen closely, it could help us see both sides of the same coin.

At this event, we will learn the songs of those birds we hold the closest, and then go on a walk. During the walk we will practice community science, keeping a log of the birds we observe with our ears.

Filmmaker Hao Zhou will give the final Open Air virtual artist talk this Saturday June 26 at 3pm! Register at publicspaceone.com/events/oatalks21

Hao’s short film “Frozen Out” will be featured in the Open Air Media Festival mobile projection program.

Hao Zhou (b.1992, China) is a screenwriter, director, and actor. Focusing on queerness, gender, sexuality, and migration, Zhou's films center marginalized people resisting structural oppression. In 2014, Zhou wrote, directed, and produced his first feature, "The Night," about queer, teenaged sex workers in urban China. The film premiered at the Berlinale and won top prizes at Geneva Independent, Nara, China Independent, Dong FF, and others. Zhou refined his screenwriting at Cannes Film Festival's Résidence, and from 2015–2017 worked in development and sales at Coproduction Office (Paris). In 2017, Zhou coproduced a stage adaptation of "The Night," a critical success at the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. From 2017–2019, Hao wrote for the film development department at Douban.com. Hao's filmmaking skillset has been further nurtured at Xining FIRST Training Camp (2017), Talents Tokyo (2018), and Berlinale Talents (2021).

Hao's second feature, "Bridled," focuses on a genderqueer Latinx immigrant in China and was supported by TOKYO FILMeX's Next Masters Support Program, for late 2021 release. Hao is also an Art With Impact awardee, producing a commissioned short-film on queer mental health in rural America (to be completed in spring 2021).

Join us Saturday June 26 at 11:30a for an Open Air virtual artist talk with Kelly Clare and Will Yager!
Register at: publicspaceone.com/events/oatalks21
“Creakily” is an aqueous collaboration between Will Yager and Kelly Clare. As a video created by Kelly is projected across the surface of large containers of water, the vessels--hooked up to transducers--vibrate with a score created by Will. The creation becomes a “material glitch.” The sureness of pre-recorded video and audio is eroded by water. Repetition drifts away from a set form, turning instead towards elemental improvisation.
OA talks are presented with generous support from the Iowa Arts Council!

Our Story

Public Space One (PS1) is an artist-led, contemporary non-profit arts organization in downtown Iowa City.

We program exhibitions, projects, participatory events, and performances, as well as maintaining a DIY infrastructure for community members to host events of their own, like comedy improv, theatre, and writing workshops, to name a few.

Our resources and projects include: the Iowa City Press Co-op (our community-access print and book arts studio), artist-led workshops, a studio residency, an art equipment lending library and zine library, a kitchen, private studio spaces, and the Center for Afrofuturist Studies residency program.

We value process, experimentation, and community-driven arts dialogue. We are dedicated to being an all-ages space that is welcoming to all who share an interest or curiosity in art,
