WHAT I’M DRINKING NOW: Drew here with a high-note to start off the week. Tonight for dinner we had lamb chops with garlic herb potatoes and an arugula salad in homemade vinaigrette, all paired with the Garage Wine Company Truquilemu Vineyard (Maule Valley) Cariñena. Cariñena is the Chilean name for Carignan, which is arguably best known for its use in the south of France. The pairing? Simply divine.
This wine’s nose has an enticing richness to it that shows faint smoked meats, leather, and balanced fruited notes. The mouth has an initial burst of red fruit that quickly softens into rich & lovely blue fruit. There's some tobacco and an ever so faint hint of vanilla, but there's also some sort of earthy thing in there, too. The tannins are super finely grained.. If I had to summarize this wine in one word, it would be: Balanced. Cheers! 🤤🍷
WHAT I'M DRINKING TONIGHT. Robert here, with a simple dinner of steak, couscous, and rapini: the 2017 Château l'Ermite d'Auzan Sainte Cécile Rouge. This wine is grown in the hills surrounding Nîmes, the hottest city in France. Despite that fact, thanks to the vineyards' elevation and the mistral winds -- along with conscientious work in the vineyard -- the wine is remarkably fresh and nimble. Equal parts Mourvèdre & Syrah with 10% Grenache, it's an amazing value at under $20 retail. Cheers!

Here's a nice interview with one of our very favorite winegrowers, Domaine Pierre Clavel -- with pics! Cheers.

WHAT I'M DRINKING NOW. Robert here. With a Wine Enthusiast recipe for creamy chickpeas & greens, and a beautiful loaf from @the_local_crumb, the Domaine Charles Baur 2018 Cuvée Charles Riesling. Riesling is a glorious grape and can make precise dry wines of electric vitality. Meyer-lemon fruit with petrol minerality: this is a lovely and everyday-affordable treat. Cheers!
WHAT I'M DRINKING NOW. Robert here. With broiled tilapia & parsley brown butter, roasted local kabocha squash, and kale salad, the Illahe Vineyards Cap Fizz. An unpretentious but (in Drew's words) "dangerously delicious" blend of Grüner, P. Gris, P. Noir, and Chardonnay is fun, festive, and widely companionable for food pairings or drinking by itself. Available in 750 or 187 ml bottles. PS Perfect for Valentine's Day!

WHAT I’M DRINKING NOW: Drew here with a great pot roast, green beans w/ shallots, and potatoes lyonnaise wine pairing. The wine in question is from Chateau Tour du Roc Milon. It hails from Pauillac, a renowned subregion of Bordeaux that is situated along the left bank of the Gironde—the largest estuary in Western Europe.
Pauillac is home to some of the biggest names in Bordeaux, including this winery’s neighbors: Pontet Canet & Mouton-Rothschild, which retail for $200+ & $500+ per bottle. Like its neighbors, Tour du Roc Milon offers a full, breathtaking, regionally specific take on Cabernet Sauvignon blends. Unlike its neighbors, however, this wine retails for a tiny fraction of that price. Family farmed since the 1940s, it truly is a steal! Cheers! 🍷

What I'm drinking now: Robert here, with a light rice-bowl dinner including cured salmon, avocado, nori, and herbs: the 2019 Domaine Chante Cigale Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc. The wine is a paragon of balance: equal parts Bourboulenc, Clairette, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, and Roussanne, it offers paradoxically deep and delicate notes of white flowers and Meyer lemon, with minerality and leesy notes. Fabulous.

WHAT I’M DRINKING NOW: Drew here. I’ve been intrigued by spicier southern cuisine during these colder months, and this shrimp, andouille sausage, and chicken jambalaya was a hit in our household. Something that isn’t always a hit, however, is the level of spice achieved—I prefer it hot, while my wife does not. With that in mind, the Domaine Charles Baur Grand Cru Pfersigberg Gewurztraminer is a perfect pairing. Classified as medium-sweet in style, it has enough sweetness to cut through the heat, without feeling cloying. I’m always amazed how this Pfersigberg Gewurztraminer combines the bold aromatics of tropical fruits, spices, and rose petal with a palate whose focused limestone marl minerality is undeniably Alsatian. Cheers!
What I'm drinking tonight. Robert here. With a dish of sauced roasted chicken thighs, broccoli, and quinoa: the 2019 Pierre Amadieu Côtes du Rhône blanc -- grown in Gigondas but not allowed (yet) to be named as such -- a white from 100% old-vine Clairette grapes. The wine offers gorgeous aromas of white flowers and pit fruits, with a delicate but full-bodied mouthfeel. This is a wine like no other, and at a mind-boggling price of less than $20 retail. Sublime.

WHAT I'M DRINKING NOW. Robert here, with grilled beef skewers, Tunisian couscous, and a kale salad: the Château Le Coteau Margaux 2016. This winery is one of the last remaining family operations in the prestigious Margaux appellation. Working with great respect for the environment, winegrower Éric Léglise produces wine of breathtaking grace and elegance. Beautiful cassis fruit and wildflowers, with a delicate touch of oak, made this wine a perfect companion for this cold-weather dinner!

Who wants a festive, delicious, and super-easy cocktail? You do, that's who. You may know how to make a Kir, by pouring a dollop of Briottet Crème de Cassis into a glass and topping it up with white wine -- or making a Kir Royale by doing the same thing with Champagne or other sparkling wine (this is an almost daily treat in my own household) -- but did you know that the cocktail was invented by Canon Felix Kir as a defiance of Nazi occupiers who had confiscated the area's red wine? Cheers!
History of the Kir Royale Cocktail If there is a classier, more elegant classic cocktail on offer, then we are yet to discover it. The Kir Royale is the ultimate champagne cocktail – simple, sleek and sophisticated. The best thing about it is that it is incredibly easy to replicate at home or in the bar,

Proud to see that Wine Enthusiast cited our 2019 Domaines Laurent Perrachon et Fils Juliénas "Les Mouilles" as one of this year's "Ten Perfect Thanksgiving Wines." All Right! 🦃 🍷

AT THE END OF THE MEAL. With pie or on their own, here are three sweet wines for finishing in gracious style. Sauternes is classic, and the Ch. Haut-Mayne is a steal at the price. Also delicious is the budget-friendly Ch. Les Arroucats from the less well known appellation of Ste-Croix-du-Mont. Finally, the Antech "Esprit de Bulles." Light, low in alcohol, lightly sweet, delicate and delicious, this is the original sparkling wine, made in the ancestral method. All three wines have a crisp finish to make them refreshing rather than heavy at the end of your big meal. Bon appétit !

BEFORE THE MEAL. Keep the cook(s) and others happy with easy apéritifs! Rockwell Vermouth (Extra Dry or Classic Sweet) and Chateau de Millet Floc de Gascogne (Armagnac blended with fresh grape juice) are excellent cocktail mixers, but we also enjoy them on their own -- over ice or just poured straight into your wine glass! Bright, refreshing, delicious palate-awakeners!

PART TWO. We are of course unabashed francophiles, so here's a slate of French wines that will pair beautifullly with your holiday feast. Champagne Vollereaux Brut Réserve, although you can never go wrong with ANY Vollereaux Champagne any day of the year. Domaine Charles Baur 2014 Riesling Grand Cru Brand, which has truly blossomed into a gorgeous wine, although any other Baur Riesling, or their lovely Eichberg Pinot Gris, or the Crémant, would do your table proud. The Cave des Vignerons de Tavel & Lirac Tavel, which I've recently posted, is welcome at virtually any meal all year round. Domaines Laurent Perrachon et Fils Juliénas "Les Mouilles" -- though, again, ANY of this grower's Beaujolais wines will make you proud for having discovered them. Finally, Domaine Marchand-Grillot "En Songe" is an apotheosis of Pinot Noir, although ANY of their Burgundy wines will take your Thanksgiving table to the next level. I am humbled by this range of wonderful wines for this wonderful time of year!
