Approximately 225,000 people in Iowa, or 9.3% of the adult population, have been diagnosed with diabetes; an additional 70,000 people in Iowa have diabetes but don’t know it, greatly increasing their health risk.

Fortunately, researchers and clinicians within The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center are working to prevent, manage, and someday even reverse or cure this disease. Read more about the difference they make in the lives of Iowans.

A relatively recent arrival at Iowa, Dr. Bhagirath Chaurasia published findings that indicate a link between lipid metabolites and insulin resistance in a recent issue of Molecular Metabolism.

Like every program within Internal Medicine, our Endocrinology Fellowship offers trainees the opportunity to craft a large portion of their training to fit their long-term career goals. And because University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics is such a large referral center and The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center hosts more than 100 faculty researchers, options for fellows are limitless.

A recent publication in Journal of Clinical Investigation from the Abel Lab points toward ways to protect certain people with diabetes from heart failure.

Back-to-back grant wins for Dr. Sam Stephens, one from the Department of Defense and the other the American Diabetes Association. Both will fund Dr. Stephens's research into how the islet beta-cell helps or hinders insulin regulation. Congratulations!

2019 Diabetes Research Center Update

Since 2008, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the University of Iowa have been united in a quest to cure diabetes once and for all through the F.O.E. Diabetes Research Center. Over the last decade, we've seen our efforts blossom from a simple dream into a world class research facility, earning hundreds of millions of dollars in grants and making scientific breakthroughs that have changed the world as we know it.

Join our Bridge to the Cure movement and help us fund preliminary drug trials to bring our research to the forefront and help us find a cure once and for all!

In a unanimous decision by more than 700 voting Fraternal Order of Eagle delegates from across the United States and Canada, the Eagles will partner with The University of Iowa in a five year fundraising project that will culminate with The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at The University of Iowa. The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center will be a dedicated center for diabetes research within the John and Mary Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building at the University Of Iowa at The University of Iowa. Money fundraised by the Fraternal Order of Eagles will go directly to medical research.
