Happy World Donor Day!
“A Heart On Valentine’s Day” by Hailey Steimel and Tabassum Hashmi (Illustrator).

About The Author: Hailey Steimel was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on September 9th, 1996. Hailey received her heart transplant in 2014, and she graduated from Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids the following year. She received her bachelor's degree in communications from Upper Iowa University in 2020, and plans to continue promoting organ donation awareness! In her free time, Hailey enjoys spending time with her family, friends, and her pets. She also loves volunteering, shopping, traveling, and writing books! Nearly 40,000 babies are born with a heart defect in the United States each year. In 2021, 1,900 children were on the national transplant list waiting for a lifesaving organ. Next up on our Black History Month series is Percy Lavon Julian. A brilliant chemist and biochemist, Julian’s research and work with soybeans was revolutionary in the medical field. He discovered how to synthesize the hormones progesterone and testosterone as well as cortisone, which is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. He also invented Aero-Foam, a soy protein based product that was used to put out fires and was an irreplaceable asset during World War II. (photo courtesy of sciencehistory.org). Boredom as a Symptom Boredom can serve several protective functions -- and it can also damage our emotional well-being.
Types of Microaggressions:
Micro-assaults: Conscious biased beliefs or attitudes expressed or acted out overtly or covertly toward a marginalized person or group (Bullying, violence, hate-speech).
Micro-insults: Interactions outside of conscious awareness that communicate insensitivity and insults that demean a person’s identity (Subtle snubs unconsciously disguised as a compliment).
Micro-invalidation: Most damaging form, directly attacking or denying the experiential realities of socially marginalized groups
(Color-blindness, “All Lives Matter”).
