West Des Moines Fire Department #IPFFatWORK

West Des Moines Firefighters were called to the Valley West Inn extended stay hotel located at 3535 Westown Parkway at 11:16 p.m. Monday night for an automatic fire alarm activation. As crews were responding, Westcom dispatch received a telephone call from someone on site who said the building was on fire. The incident was quickly upgraded to a working fire which dispatched several more fire apparatus to the scene. The first arriving crews saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the building and immediately requested a second alarm.

Numerous occupants were jumping from windows of the building with several more trapped inside or hanging out of windows signaling for help. Firefighters began making numerous rescues with ladders on the outside of the building and went inside the building to look for victims. Some occupants handed children and infants out of windows to firefighters before ladders were in place. Hallways were filled with thick black smoke and visibility was near zero inside most of the building.

The hotel is three stories tall and has a total of 142 rooms. At the time of the fire, 127 of the rooms were occupied, and many of the guests were sleeping when the fire began. As occupants made it outside, some began grabbing firefighters telling them where people were trapped inside. Initial estimates are that firefighters successfully rescued two dozen occupants from the building, including several children.

EMS personnel transported two occupants to the hospital for minor injuries and treated approximately six more on scene. There were no fatalities as a result of this fire.

A total of three alarms were called bringing in fire and EMS crews from Clive (Iowa) Fire Department, Waukee Fire Department, Urbandale Fire Department, Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department, and Windsor Heights (Iowa) Fire Department. Crews worked through the overnight and morning extinguishing hot spots and were on scene until Monday afternoon helping to assist those affected by the fire. Fire and Police Investigators are currently investigating the cause of the fire, and an initial damage estimate is still being determined.

The West Des Moines Fire Department would like to thank West Des Moines Emergency Medical Services, Westcom Emergency Communications, West Des Moines Police Department, West Des Moines Public Services, all of the fire departments that responded for mutual aid, Polk County Emergency Management Agency, Iowa and American Red Cross - Serving Iowa for their help with this major incident.

General information

The I.P.F.F. is the membership of Unionized Fire Fighters in the State of Iowa, from which, at yearly conventions, held in a different city each year, resolutions are to be voted on that may pertain to the Laws that may be helpful to Fire Fighters or Laws that may be against Fire Fighters, and Laws to keep the Association strong. One such example of a Law that has been voted on at a convention because of backing from the Unions, is the 56 hour workweek. And still others are pension laws and the Heart and Lung Bill. Today we enjoy many benefits as a result of the men and women who have fought for what we have and for benefits that are always in the best interest of the Fire Fighters.
