Memorial Day weekend is historically one of the deadliest holidays for travel in Iowa and driving behaviors that lead to this increased risk are distracted driving, impaired drivers, aggressive driving and excessive speed. In an attempt to make our roadways safer, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a special project to promote education and enforcement of these violations. On May 30, 2022, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting a speed enforcement project with a primary focus on Highway 1 in rural Johnson County.
When drivers see a police officer on the road the first thing they do is slow down. Therefore, just with our visible presence, we are moving closer to zero fatalities on our roadways. Our ultimate goal is to make our roads safer and lower the number of traffic related deaths that occur over the Memorial Day weekend.
As you honor and celebrate the memories of your loved ones this Memorial Day, please also take a moment to remember those who served our country and sacrificed to help provide us this land of freedoms.
