Our young ICFC fencers competed again today at the Regional Youth Circuit tournament in Illinois. Gabriel Bales fenced in the Y12 Men's Foil, earning points towards qualifying for Nationals with his 28th place finish. Mira Gollnick, Keira Cromwell, and Sophia Jin all fenced in the Y14, coming in 9th, 14th, and 19th respectively. Mira won five bouts in the pools, Keira won three bouts in the pools, and Sophia won two bouts in the pools. Keira and Sophia had to fence each other AGAIN in the direct eliminations today! Mira is now qualified to fence Y14 Women's Foil at Nationals! Good fencing, ICFC Junior Team members!

Our ICFC Junior Team members competing at the Regional Youth Circuit in Chicago today did us proud! Keira Cromwell and Sophia Jin competed in the Y12 Women's Foil. Sophia had two victories in the pools and then unfortunately had to face her teammate Keira in the direct eliminations. She took 11th place in her first RYC ever - great work, Sophia!

Keira had four victories in the pools and kept on winning through four direct elimination bouts, finishing with the gold medal after an exciting 15-14 win in the finals. Congratulations to the RYC Y12 Women's Foil champion, Keira!

In the afternoon ICFC's Mira Gollnick competed in the Cadet Women's Foil. She was undefeated in the pools (she was only hit five times!) and went on to take the bronze medal and earn her E22! Wow! Congratulations, Mira!

Hi, it's Saturday, January 15th, and yes, we are open today. If the roads are treacherous for you, you are welcome to skip class today and make it up at one of our regularly scheduled classes next week. Remember if you come to wear your snow boots and change into clean, dry athletic shoes when you arrive. We need to keep the salt and water off our fencing floor. Stay safe!

01/14/2022

It's Friday, January 14th and the ICFC will be closed this evening due to the winter weather. Junior Team will meet via Zoom as we have done MANY times during the pandemic!

01/01/2022

Happy New Year! Except it's not so happy, as we will be closed today due to the weather. The roads are already slippery. Stay home and stay safe, and we'll have fun fencing again soon!

We had a great turnout for our Thin Mint Open tournament today! With ten in the foil event, Luke Tierney (ICFC) was our champion, winning 15-14 over Mary Jo Ratchford (ICFC), who earned the silver medal in an exciting bout. Mathew Johnstone (Red Door Fencing) and Evan Williams (The University of Iowa Fencing Club) took the bronzes.

In the epee event, with 16 in the competition, Timothy Glass (Ataba Fencing Club) defeated Nick Beatty (ICFC) 15-14 to take the gold in another exciting bout. Nick got the silver and earned his C21. Bronze medals went to Dave Swanson (Ataba Fencing Club/Illinois Fencers Club) and Daniel J. Lee (Fencing Center of Chicago/Glenbrook South High School). Daniel earned his C21 too.

With six fencers in the saber event, James Altschul (UIFC/Crimson Blades Fencing Academy) took gold, Kaylie MacDonald (UIFC/Laguna Fencing Center) took silver, and Mathew Johnstone (Red Door Fencing) and Kyle Watkins (Central Fencing Club/UIFC) took the bronzes.

Many thanks to Sara Pettit for her excellent officiating!

Thanks for coming, everyone, and great fencing!

Mira earned the bronze medal in Cadet Women's Foil, and fifth place in Division II Women's Foil, following in Maggie's footsteps with a tough 14-15 loss at the end. Nice fencing, Maggie and Mira!

ICFC's Keira Cromwell and Mira Gollnick competed at another Regional Youth Circuit yesterday, this time in St. Louis, MO, and they each brought home another medal! Keira earned silver in the Y12 women's foil, and Mira earned bronze in the Y14 women's foil. Keira took sixth in the Y14 women's foil - too bad they had to fence each other in the direct eliminations! Congratulations to you both!

Three of ICFC's Junior Team fencers competed in the Regional Youth Circuit in Peoria, IL yesterday with great success! Mira Gollnick and Keira Cromwell competed in Y14 Women's Foil, where they took the silver and bronze medals! Strangely, Keira was the only entry in Y12 Women's Foil, so they invited her to fence with the boys. Keira was happy to oblige, finishing with the silver medal and going undefeated until the gold medal match! Gabriel Bales fenced in his first tournament since the pandemic began, also in the Y12 Foil, and placed a respectable tenth. Nice fencing, ICFC youngsters!

Our silver medalists were Trey Montgomery, Mary Jo Ratchford, and Ahanna Gupta, and our bronze medalists were Maggie Wright, Alex Nierman, and Brian Gollnick. There were some exciting moments, especially the 45-44 match between the silver and bronze medal teams! Special congratulations to Ahanna, Brian, and Alex who were competing in their very first tournament today!

ICFC's Tristan O'Harrow has had a busy two days competing at Nationals! Yesterday he fenced in Division II Men's Epee, finishing 127th. He went 1-4 in the pools with three tough 4-5 losses. He won his first direct elimination bout 15-13 and then went down to the #4 seed in his second direct elimination bout, 12-15.

Today Tristan fenced in the Division III Men's Epee. Tristan went 2-4 in the pools, with three more tough 4-5 losses, including one to the eventual silver medalist! In the direct eliminations, Tristan had another close bout, going down 13-15, and finished 77th.

Tristan and ICFC's Ron Herman have also been working all week as armorers at Nationals (the folks who test equipment and keep all the electric scoring equipment running smoothly). Without the armorers, Nationals wouldn't be possible, so many thanks to these two!

ICFC's Luke Tierney fenced again at Nationals today, this time in Vet-60 Men's Epee. In the pools he went 2-4, with three bouts going 5-4 and one bout against an A fencer going to time. Luke went down in his DE 6-10, finishing 46th in a very strong event (he finished ahead of 3 B's and an A!) Good fencing, Luke!

07/06/2021

Only two ICFC fencers decided to participate in the USA Fencing National Championships this year. Today Luke Tierney competed in Vet-60 Men's Foil. Luke placed 20th - not bad for having picked up a foil only once in the last 18 months!
