Toured the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art today before it's even finished!!🤩 What a beautiful space! They will be able to do so much with this building, from live performances to meeting spaces & classrooms for teachers to utilize, it is a dynamic space.
Absolutely loved all the different materials & textures used to make it so unique. And you wouldn't believe the lengths Russell Construction & Development is going to in order to protect the art. So impressive. Russell Construction also built the Figge Art Museum in Davenport. They know what they're doing! Proud to have them as a member & a strong community partner here in Iowa City!

Visiting the construction site of the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art!
What a day! Yesterday the Russell Team took a day away from the office for some team bonding fun! We started at Camp Liberty in New Liberty, IA where we had a blast tackling the low ropes course, climbing the rock wall and zip lining. After a fun morning we enjoyed lunch and headed to the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art in Iowa City to see the progress on the construction of this exciting, large-scale project. We capped off the day together with food and refreshments at Big Grove Brewery.
The interior design concept was developed to bring the outside in through large glass facades and occupiable voids in the building massing, acting as an extension of the neighboring public greenspace. Public spaces and administrative offices feature daylighting, and a central exterior courtyard provides an amenity space for gallery viewers and additional display space for large sculptural installations.

Behind the Scenes:

Today we will be giving a look at the construction going on at our University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art project. The Stanley Museum of Art will replace the original university art museum — a historic structure damaged in a flood in 2008 — after studies concluded that mitigation of the historic structure wasn’t cost effective.
13 years ago in #FMHistory, the Iowa River flooded its banks in a historic 500-year flood. It affected over 20 campus buildings and caused millions of dollars in damage.

Now, FM is completing the long road to flood recovery by building the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art, bringing back a home for art pieces like Jackson Po***ck’s “Mural” for the first time since 2008.

Summer may not be formally here by the calendar, but this first post-Memorial Day weekend is just a glimpse of what's in store! Enjoy getting out and about in the beautiful weather, including the downtown Iowa City Summer Gallery Walk, featuring glimpses at galleries that have been closed since the pandemic (PS1) or have brand new locations (ArtiFactory)! The region's online game is as strong as ever, too, meaning that no matter your comfort level, this weekend is packed with opportunity.

Today is Diego Rivera’s birthday!

One of the best-known proponents of Mexican Muralism, Rivera painted huge murals using a centuries-old fresco technique and modernist styles to portray heroic visions of Mexico’s past and present that captured international attention.

In the 1930s, Jackson Po***ck visited the New Workers School and saw Rivera work and paint murals. Po***ck also studied at the Experimental Workshop another muralist, David Alfaro Siqueiros. Both muralist influenced his work.

The University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art aspires to transform lives by connecting the University of Iowa community, Iowans and the world with extraordinary works of art. Founded in 1969, the museum now holds one of the nation’s foremost university art collections, including artworks from around the world and in a range of media from paintings, sculptures, and works on paper to textiles, metalwork, and ceramics.

In 2022, the Stanley Museum of Art will open the doors of its new home—a sustainable, state of the art building designed by Rod Kruse of the Des Moines-based architectural firm BNIM. The beautiful new museum will sit adjacent to the University of Iowa Main Library and Gibson Square Park and will encompass spaces designed for experiential learning, performance, and social events as well as elegant galleries for the display of art.

Before the new Stanley Museum of Art building opens, visitors can view selections from our world-class collection in two temporary locations: the Stanley Visual Classroom on the third floor of the Iowa Memorial Union in Iowa City, which is always free and open to the public, and the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, where visitors who present proof of Stanley Museum membership are also admitted free of charge. The Visual Classroom features works of art that are being used by UI faculty to support their teaching in courses across the curriculum. Also on view is a rotating selection of African art given to the museum by Richard and Mary Jo Stanley, discerning collectors who ensured that the Stanley Museum of Art—which bears their name--holds one of the finest African Art collections in the United States. At the Figge Art Museum, you can see examples of the Stanley’s world-renowned modern painting collection, including works by Marsden Hartley, Robert Motherwell, Stuart Davis, Sam Gilliam, Yayoi Kusama, and Alma Thomas, among others.
