That has to be my favorite ending to a pre interview yet.
I don’t get nervous about speaking in front of any size of audience.
I don’t get nervous about who is in the audience.
But it would be a lie to say that I get nervous when I can’t swear.
In fact the only thing that makes me nervous is having to watch my words.
I rarely drop F bombs out of anger, it’s an adjective for me. I think it’s a bit silly how much power we give swear words. I think they give language color, depending on tone, pitch, speed- their meaning changes drastically. The same can’t be said for most other words.
I love chatting with people from other countries, especially Ireland, who have the same relationship with those words as I do. We get along quite nicely.
But I run summer camps for kids, and have for the last 8 years- which means that when sh$t hits the fan in ways it only can with 20 kids out in nature, in the kitchen, and with farm animals- I can’t actually say the words best suited for those moments.
There are countless ways that my work with kids prepares me for my work as a speaker and consultant. Learning to be mindful of my words and have fun using alternative words- well I’ll be putting that to use this Thursday!
I saw a man today who is recovering from a stroke, struggle to communicate with his words. It was humbling and an amazing reminder to be grateful to have the ability to speak without struggle- swear words or not.
Tune into Talk of Iowa with Charity Nebbe- Public this Thursday to learn new ways to manage holiday stress!

The right words to describe the feeling of deep responsibility and gratitude when a parent places their trust in me.
Trusting me to keep their child safe when they drop off at camp.
Trusting me with making a birthday special.
Trusting me with their hard earned money to provide a fair exchange of value.
Or trusting me to give advice.
And sometimes, just trusting me to hold space for grief, pain and anger.
I created BMK as a place for people to gather, to connect, to learn. A place where silliness, mistakes and failure are not just tolerated but welcomed.
It’s a place that is ruled by compassion, respect, and a healthy dose of humor.
Today it was filled for 3.5hrs with the sound of 12 year old girls celebrating a birthday by tackling a Nailed It! and creativity competition.
I have gotten to watch so many kids grow up over the years and every time they choose to come back, my gratitude grows.
My way of honoring and thanking everyone who has supported BMK during the year is perhaps a bit odd.
But it’s very BMK.
I don’t sell any products over the holidays. Instead I create 500-1,000 gifts to be given away for free- so that those who are struggling financially can partake in my favorite part of the holidays- giving.
I can do this because of the support of all of you.

If you love America- vote.
Making voting as accessible and easy as possible should be what every American wants.
Every American should be livid at politicians who spend time, energy and money to make voting harder- not easier. Because the accessibility to voting need to transcends the muck of politics.
I refuse to spit on the right that women fought so hard to give to me and daughters.
Which is why I take them with me.
And with them by my side, I voted.
They watched me vote for both republicans and democrats.
They heard me explain why we want everyone to vote- no matter if they vote for the same candidate.
Because the democratic system is bigger than me getting the politician that I like elected.
When I was a kid and wanted to pick a flower while hiking, my parents would give me the whole “ If you pick one no one will notice, but if everyone picked a flower there wouldn’t be any left” talk.
Same applies to littering. And countless other parent to kid teachable moments.
It applies to this moment.
Sure if just you, and only you, didn’t vote- it wouldn’t be a big deal.
But when millions decide to not vote or can’t vote- our country suffers.
Because voting is something that makes being American so darn great.
It matters.
Local, national- when there is an election- show up.
Vote.

This week’s question comes from a supervisor asking about how to best motivate her team- “...they just don’t seem to care anymore, and the quality and effort of work is not what it used to be. I saw your posts about being self motivated but how do I motivate others?”
I am a runner. I love it. I do my best thinking while running when I am alone with my thoughts and feel mentally refreshed when I am done.
I have a goldendoodle who for years was my running buddy, she would happily put in 10 mile runs with me and the girls in the stroller.
She is too old to run now. So it’s my younger springerdoodle’s turn to be my running partner.
Except he is not motivated to run for the sake of running.
He sees no purpose to it. And literally lays down in the middle of the road causing me to come to a sudden stop, testing the strength of my rotator cuff.
However, the minute he sees a squirrel- he becomes Usain Bolt.
Involve a ball, and running is all he wants to do.
We both find purpose in running but our motivation is different. I am chasing my desire to do deep thinking and work through problems, Banry is chasing squirrels and balls.
The mistake often made in teaching leaders how to motivate, is that the emphasis is only put on discovering how individuals are motivated.
What is left out is the connection to purpose.
If you want to motivate your team, you need to not only understand different ways to motivate- (don’t over complicate it, get curious and have a conversation about motivation) AND you need to connect them to purpose.
Purpose is the fuel that ignites the internal motivation that you, as a leader, strikes a match to.
Without purpose, the flame burns down the match and the leader gets burned, annoyed and pi**ed off because they don’t see results.
Bantry sees zero purpose in running in rain. I can throw 69 balls and release 87 squirrels and he’ll slow clap my wasted efforts with the condescension of a cat.
Motivation requires Purpose.

It comes from a story of a zen master who had a prized cup, and while he chose to use it and show it to others, he also repeated to himself “the glass is already broken”, that way, when the day came that it did break, he would not be devastated or surprised, because in his mind it was already broken.
Whenever the girls get new toys, or I get something nice, we put this into practice, reminding each other that “the glass is already broken”.
“Fortune falls heavily on those to whom she is unexpected; the man who is always expecting her easily withstands her”-Seneca.
Finn really wanted a Newton’s Cradle pendulum for her reset corner in her room last Christmas.
She declared it would help her relax.
I asked if untangling the strings would also help her relax. She passionately made an argument as to how it wouldn’t get tangled as it would stay in one spot and never move.
“The glass is already broken” I whispered to myself as I placed my order.
It arrived tangled.
And thus began its journey of becoming tangled then untangled and magically moving all over instead of staying in that dedicated spot.
I have only heard Newton’s balls clicking in perpetual motion once.
While doing the deep mom level clean of Finn’s room this week, I found the pendulum under a pile of stuffed animals and socks in the black hole that seems to be the space between her bed and the wall.
I pulled it out and looked at the tangled dangling balls and smiled. The glass is already broken.
Tangled balls is not a big deal, but so often we allow these little things to pile up, to add heat until we go from that simmer to a boil.
I laughed with a woman at Aldi’s today in the “wants vs needs” aisle when I told her don’t buy nice things simply so that I don’t have to work any harder than necessary to not care if they get ruined.
Life’s misfortunes, big and small, become a lot easier when “the glass is already broken.”

Hello and welcome to Charli Dean Designs! I recently had my branding photos done with JOYful Photos by Jenna Joy so I thought it was a great time to reintroduce myself.
I am Paige the owner of CDD. I started my business not long after the Covid lockdown began. I was at home with my two boys and like everyone else I was going a little stir crazy. I have always loved crafting and creating. I was born with the I can make that/do anything gene, so I will give about any project a try.
I live in Coralville, Iowa with my husband Eric and our two boys Cooper(13) and Quinn(4). We also have a dog and two cats. I am a preschool teacher and have been teaching for 15 plus years. Besides spending time with my family and friends, I love working in the yard, finding new projects for my husband to “help me” with and buying too many house plants. I am a mental health advocate and supporter of women empowering other women, especially in small businesses. I love making custom pieces so please don’t hesitate to reach out if you would like something made.
Fun fact: my husband and I are only children and we thought our son Cooper was going to be an only as well until we were surprised with Quinn.

Summer camps start tomorrow! Can’t wait to show you what we have come up with!!
2023 Summer Camps start tomorrow with Fairy Camp!
As my leadership consulting and speaking business continues to grow, I have been asked many times if I will continue doing summer camps.
They require a tremendous amount of work before, during and after- I calculated the hours I have already invested in camp prep since January and combined with the hours yet to be spent this summer plus the cost of repairs and additions for the camps and there is a grand $0 in profit to be made.
So why do them?
Because these camps serve a much bigger purpose than profit.
Getting to watch kids grow each year in their confidence and comfort with failure and success in all they do here is priceless.
The friendships I have made with the parents of my campers- priceless.
The families I have grown to love…
The hugs from return campers…
The laughter, the squeals, the cheers and the compassion witnessed between campers…
The sweet moments, the pull out your hair moments, the tears of exhaustion during Covid summer, the deeeeeep breath moments, the pure joy moments…
All are priceless and make me better at all that I do.
The last few summers I have decided to use my camps to promote other amazing women in business, including Paige with . She spent hours today and last week setting up and planning out this week’s fairy camp and it’s going to be the best one yet! Plus she has her earrings here for sale at an incredible discount all summer long for all camp parents!
Here’s to the first of 8 camps!
